Hello, DJs, and welcome to the very first results show of Absolita's Music Taste! I'm very excited to host this, as I really love finding new songs I like and discussing them with whoever will pay attention. I don't have much of a formal intro here, but this week, I challenged you to introduce me to YOUR music taste. For the most part, you all impressed, and nobody was offensively bad, so I'm expecting good things from this season. Hopefully you can all stick to the standard you're setting!
One thing I do want to say before we get into this week's judging is that for the most part, I will be scoring these songs out of 10 and basing my decisions off that- I may introduce some other scoring quirks if I feel the round calls for it (which will vary from round-to-round, but if I'm not exclusively scoring based on how much I like the song, I'll make sure to outline that in the introduction to the theme. With that being said, let's get into the judging itself!
First off, I'll announce the safe DJs and in 10 words or less, explain how I felt about the song.
Nalia - Disclosure, Fatoumah Diawara - Douha (Mali Mali) - fun song, very upbeat and dance-y
HighNoon - Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Isis - this was good, but not particularly my taste
AlexaVonTrayne - LOONA/Yves - new - not my fave loona solo but still very good
ItsAustin - Nicki Minaj - Come On A Cone - some bars were hits, some bars were misses
Judi - Tina Turner - The Best - went over better than expected
mathboy9 - KOTO - Tiger Fire Cyber Fighter - pure chaos in jpop form. pretty ok
Becksta20 - P!nk - Raise Your Glass - unironically loved this when i was younger. stan p!nk
pinkiepie512 - Beyonce - Run The World (Girls) - i mean, she didn't lie
Heavenlee - Melanie Martinez - Orange Juice - amazing concept, ok execution of said concept
iSandeh - Dreamcatcher - Scream - legendary instrumental break. pretty good song
That leaves our tops and bottoms, who I will go into more detail for. :3
TheGoodMan - Yaeji - Raingurl - Make it rain girl make it rain make it rain girl make it rain. This is honestly such a hit and no wonder Yaeji fucking took off after it. One of the comments on the video said something like "this is the most chill rave song ever" or something and I was like wow... that's so true. That's literally this song! Incredibly catchy and dreamy, uh, I honestly don't know what else to say. I think this song is appropriately weird to the point where even though it's really chill, it's still keeping you interested. Amazing song, amazing job. Good first impression, Jana B.
turkeylover - Archie, DoNormaal - Bad Bitch - This was one of the songs that I went into not knowing anything about, and it COMPLETELY blew me out of the water. Like... similarly to Yaeji, she's got a very relaxed & lowkey vibe, but the vocal performance is just immaculate. Once that pre-chorus hits I knew this was a fucking banger. There's such an air of confidence about her and it's infectious. I'm literally in the hospital getting treated for COVID because of this song. Also the video is very very cute I love all her friends just hanging out in her bed eating lollipops, amazing. The DoNormaal feature was also great and provided a pretty solid foil to Ms. Archie with her more gruff voice. Didn't know her either but she fit very well with the song while still being different. In a word? Stunning.
Kmartt - *NSYNC - Tearin' Up My Heart - Err, not to rain on the parade, but I'm not really like a 90s boy band kind of person. A little behind my time that I really became a music nerd. Don't get me wrong - the production is super clean and all the performances are fine, but I guess my biggest issue is that boy band music is pretty safe, to put it bluntly. I could definitely bump this but it wouldn't be something I'd reach for no matter what vibe I'm going for. Sorry for like, dragging your music taste, but I don't begrudge you NSYNC, they're great, just not my thing! =L
MichelleObama - Trina - Single Again - Hmm, this was kind of a miss for me comparatively. I actually do like parts of this song, the first verse is pretty fresh, and the chorus is actually really good, but the instrumental is kinda... I don't know. It's very by the numbers for a 2000s pop/rnb song and it's just the same synth line over and over. The second verse is a little crunchy too. I feel bad asking people to send me their like fave songs/a song that describes their taste really well and then being like "i don't like this that much" but that is the entire point so I can't be that apologetic. Anyways, I do overall LIKE the song, but compared to a lot of these I didn't like it as much.
HowLovely - Aseul - Always With You - Wow, I mean... wow. This was immaculate. I absolutely LOVE the instrumental, the fucking bassline??? I mean hello??? This actually took a couple listens to me for to really feel it fully and I knew it was gonna take me a minute to really decide how I felt about it. The more I listen, the more I like it. It definitely feels very 80s but make it a little 2020 (or i guess more accurately 2018 but same thing). It's so dreamy and her vocals over the instrumental just ride so nicely... she reminds me a lot of Yeule idk if you know her but if you do you would totally see the comparison. Anyways this was just a lovely piece of k-dreampop I guess I would call it, I have no way I can express that further than I already have. Very good first song to send.
tbrown_47 - Nao - If You Ever - YES. LITERALLY JUST YES. I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVED Saturn when it came out I was all OVER this record anyone who knows me can vouch. This and a blunt is kinda... everything I need for the rest of my life. The way those drums hit is so amazing... I honestly prefer this version to the one with that plant 6LACK on it (although he doesn't actually ruin the song or anything) because her vocals are beautiful. Honestly you really could have picked any song off this album and gotten a HIGH this week but this is definitely one of my favorites. Very well done, and I think this was probably a risk in your mind but you hit the bulls-eye.
cheritaisdelicious - Father John Misty - Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings - Hmm, this is definitely another song that I can respect, but isn't for me. I do see the humor in it- it's kind of a ridiculous premise and I love the song concept itself, but the sound of it is kinda just... meh. The guitar is a little too crunchy for me and I tend to not really love rock instrumentals, and the vocal passages aren't like blowing me away. I do like the little ooooooooohs that happen nearing the end of the song, that part sounds very nice. That's about it for sounds I love from this song, though. Definitely a good song and I see why you'd like it, but not really a song I can get into outside of the premise and a few bits and pieces of the sound.
So, those are my critiques!!! However, since MmabatlokoaMolefe didn't submit, she's going to be the one eliminated. No need for any song and dance there. Kmartt, Cherita, and Ms. Obama, you're all safe for another week. Don't hate me for hating your songs, just, uh, try to pander to me more I guess. kek

. turkeylover!!! This was amazing, and out of the four, it was the one that i would say i was most impressed by, and it was also a song i wasn't really expecting.
