New's Movie Taste S2 - ROUND 7 (RESULTS)

2 NewNightmare7, Mar 2, 2022

Heyyyyy results time!
Ok so based on how I personally feel, I am not awarding a LOW placement but someone will be eliminated unfortunately...
With that, here are the critiques:
NanoNerd - Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory (1971) - Honestly I am really surprised I have never seen this movie before. I know it is iconic in cinema and has a huge legacy but I grew up on the Tim Burton version (which I still enjoy) so how does this version compare? Uhm well its definitely colourful! The boat scene is truly creepy like damn. I like the theory that the kids are being murdered because Gene Wilder just doesn't give a shit and its kind of great? Anyways, I wasn't feeling it for like the first 50 minutes but the movie started to pick up from the boat scene onward and a large part of that is solely on Wilder. He really steals the show which while its great to watch, it defeats quite a bit of the source material which is what I like about Tim Burton's version. It shares the screen between the awestruck Freddie Highmore and the very extravagent Johnny Depp. In this movie, Charlie is just boring (or he looks scared the entire time). While I also like the colours and use of them in this movie, I can't help but compare it to its more vibrant counterpart (same with the music). Its hard to not make comparisons when both strive to do different things and I enjoy one alot more than the other but thats not to say this movie has a place. Its iconic for a reason and while im not as invested in it, I see why it has been so successful and I wouldn't harp anyone who finds this the superior version.
Booyahhayoob - The Pink Panther (1963) - This film is a lie and barely uses the colour pink and has an absence of panthers im offended. I actually really enjoyed this and I wasn't expecting to. Sure there isn't any pink but the colours do pop off especially with really nice wide shots that help contrast the colours to the story. The story itself, while basic but probably innovating for its time, is very investing due to the sophisticated writing and the performances. I like the comedy, its physical which is nice. I don't need overly bombastic comedic timing when it can be simple yet effective and Peter Sellers sells it very well. Yeah, I really enjoyed this!
CarolinaSteele - The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe (2005) - I remember loving this movie as a kid. Took me a while to come around to it but when I did I was hooked! It's definitely interesting watching it through the eyes of an adult. To start, while some of the child acting is not the best (particularily from the boys), Georgie Henley is really good in this movie. Has a very sympathetic quality to her character. James McAvoy is also great and really helps introduce the world but the real scene stealer is Tilda Swinton. My god she has this alien like quality to her that just is gorgeous yet terrifying. I also really liked the..

New's Movie Taste S2 - ROUND 7

5 NewNightmare7, Feb 26, 2022

Hello! Final 5!
So I typically associate everything with a colour. It helps me understand things a bit more and I apply that to media alot. Certain songs have colours to me, certain movies have colours to me so its only fitting this round is about COLOURS! (I'm Canadian so thats how I spell it)
There are 3 ways to interpret this round:
1. Submit a movie with a colour in the title.
2. Submit a movie that you associate a particular colour with and let me know that colour before hand.
3. Submit a movie that just has a big colour pallet.
I'd personally go with options 2 or 3 if I were you but you do you! Ok good luck <3

New's Movie Taste S2 - ROUND 4 (RESULTS)

2 NewNightmare7, Feb 18, 2022

Welcome to round 4 results!
I was thinking about it alot and I was like I don't wanna give a Low placement this round...so im not going to!
Anyways, here are all of the critiques:
JayElVeeIsBack - Pulp Fiction (1994) - I mean its hard not to give praise to this movie. So many people say its Tarantino's masterpiece and I totally see why. There is not an moment wasted in this movie. Despite it being long it flows so well, the perfofmances are masterclass. The music is amazing. From the opening scene to shooting Marvin in the face to the sodomy scene to the overdose scene its iconic. Plain and simple, its iconic. Is it my favourite Tarantino film though? No but I can't deny its probably number 2 or 3 and it is a masterpiece.
Thirteen - Phantasm (1979) - Man I respect the hell out of Don Coscarelli for direcing, writing, producing, editing and being the DP of this movie. I admire people who put so much passion and effort into their craft. I totally see why this is a cult classic. It has some great gore, great lore and a stand out performance by Angus Scrimm. Even being a minimally financed movie, its shot pretty well (even better than some modern movies). Where my issues lies is in the fact that I find this movie pretty boring. For such a short runtime, i found it very hard to keep myself invested which is a bummer cause I really wanted to love this movie. I more so respect it rather than enjoy it but I would like to check out the sequels at some point.
Iindsay - The Blair Witch Project (1999) - This is movie where absolutely nothing happens...yet I am terrified. I love the set up and pay off and watching MatPat's theory on this movie honestly heightens the experience for me despite it most likely not being true. Its just dumb people being stuck in a forrest yet the execution is so well done. I also have to give respect towards the marketing of this movie. I wish I was alive and old enough at the time to really experience this movie at the time of release. Watching it years later knowing may not have the biggest impact of what was being acheived earlier but it still has a good entertaining quality to it. Great film!
CarolinaSteele - Little Miss Sunshine (2006) - My friend loves this movie and through years of asking, showed this to me in high school and I remember really enjoying it but how does it hold up now? Tremendously well. I absolutely love this movie. I love the themes of the movie and I love how inspiring it is. You dont need to have a set path or you can be beaten by the world but as long as you do you, things will be good and I aspire to follow that in life right now. Steve Carell gives an incredibly grounded performance that stands out alot to me. Alan Arkin is hilarious and Abigail Breslin made me tear up during her hotel scene with Arkin im not gonna lie. Should have won an oscar. Everyone else is great and really get time to shine. I could gush for a while..

Welcome to round 4 everyone!
So I was thinking about last season and alot of films I enjoyed came from particular style of filmmaking
So inspired by PennyTrationStan, this round is all about Independent Films! I want you to submit a film that was not produced by a big production company or studio. Do with that how you will.
Good luck everyone!
