Results time! Y’all this is gonna be so funny because I will likely write these long ass comments, with random anecdotes, quoting my favorite lines, talking about what album the song is from, etc, and I am fully aware that most of you never even heard of this band before and didn’t particularly enjoy the theme and my words mean nothing and I am basically just talking to myself, but I mean...same as always? Let’s get to it!
So for this round, I listened to all of the songs and gave my feedback, but no one will be eliminated, because two people who were going to play dropped out, but also because I like everyone to have one free round because you're all getting used to me. And also because I can't possibly eliminate someone sending a song by my favorite band anyway. So here are the commentary in order of submission, and I'll throw in a quick order of highest to lowest at the end.
sosyomomma Waste of Paint: This is off the album Lifted, probably one of my top 5 from that album, maybe even top 3. It’s like a very classic Bright Eyes song, a mixture of storytelling with a bit of ranting/trademark Conor yelling. Also, fun fact, this song has the word cherry in it, which is cool because I know how it would sound if he sang my name <3 Ugh I love him so much, this is a great song to start my wonderful game, thank you.
BarbraStreisand Mariana Trench: This is from Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was, which came out last year. So when the album came out, I didn’t really listen to it, I like listened to the whole thing through once and that was it, because it was the first album in a decade, and like, I love old Bright Eyes so much, but the album before this one wasn’t the best, and I like a lot of Conor’s solo stuff since then, but I just figured the new album couldn’t really top old Bright Eyes, but then like this year I just randomly started listening to it, and I became obsessed, I have probably listened to this album in full at least a hundred times, fun fact this album is often what I am listening to while playing frookies. Anyway, this isn’t in my favorite songs off the album, but the bar is so high on that, and it’s still a good song, and it’s kind of upbeat (for Cherry music anyway) so I am not surprised someone picked it!
Joee323 First Day of My Life: This is off of I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning, which is one of my top 5 albums of all time. This is also the most “mainstream” Bright Eyes song, and as soon as I posted the theme I thought “I wonder who will send First Day of My Life” because when I used to host music games on another site, anytime I did a theme incorporating this band, everyone would be falling all over themselves to be the first person to send this, haha. BUT even though the song is so obvious, it’s like...well liked for a reason, because it’s a really cute love song. If you liked this song you should look up the official music video for it btw, because it’s super cute. My favorite line of this song is “with these things there’s no telling, you just have to wait and see, but I’d rather be working for a paycheck, than waiting to win the lottery” <3
joshgillespie Forced Convalescence: Also from Down in the Weeds, and this is one of my favorites! I really, really like this song, like it’s been one of my current favorites the last couple months. So this is a band that I listened to a lot when I was younger, like my early 20s especially, and the singer is a few years older than me. And so all my old favorites from then are still great and I love them and there is so much nostalgia with them as well, but this album is like, adult Conor and in this song he talks about turning 40 and it just hit me like wow, Conor is old now but like...still making music and speaking to me as this older presence, it hits differently than when I listen to a really old song when he mentions being 22, and I am a decade past that now, so this, thinking about him turning 40 makes me feel less old if that makes sense. This is also a song that I will frequently put on for background music when I am playing tengaged challenges lmao.
Hunty Love I Don’t Have to Love: There is a cover of this song by a female singer named Bettie Serveert that you might like a bit more if you wanna check it out. This song is also off the album Lifted, and it’s always been one of my favorites on that album. Ugh the opening notes of this song are sooooo good, this song definitely has a different tone than a lot of Bright Eyes songs, and it has that kind of sexy but in a depraved way kind of sound. It’s basically about emptiness, and filling that emptiness with sex and drugs. “Love’s an excuse to get hurt, and to hurt, do you like to hurt? I do, I do, then hurt me…” So good.
Tryphena Hot Knives: This is off Cassadaga. Honestly this is probably the weakest submission so far, but like, this is my favorite band so even a lesser song by them isn’t BAD. This song does seem really fitting for you, like mentioning mystics and stuff, it has very third eye kind of vibes, not surprised you picked it!
Booyahhayoob Old Soul Song (For the New World Order): Haha you act like this theme was such torture, but you picked a good song at least! This is off I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning, which I mentioned earlier is one of my favorite albums of all time. “On the way home held your camera like a Bible, just wishing so bad that it held some kind of truth, and I stood nervous next to you in the dark room, you dropped the paper in the water and it all began to bloom” it’s deep, okay. You wouldn’t understand!
#Nenalalala Four Winds: “She’s standing in the ashes at the end of the world, four winds blowing through her hair <3” This is the superior Cassadaga song submitted, you should listen to this one, Tryphena. Driving to Cassadaga to communicate with the dead! They said you better look alive! This is also pretty upbeat for a Bright Eyes song, and it kinda has some country vibes, but not in a gross way, just like folksy twang kind of.
Lukesaur Drunk Kid Catholic: I am actually reallyyyy excited that you sent this. This is off of Noise Floor, which isn’t like a normal album, it’s like an assortment of songs that weren’t on other albums, the “rarities” and this is my favorite song off of that. This song was actually like...really big for me during a kind of dark point in my life, shortly after I graduated college my anxiety got really bad, and I just kind of...felt lost and confused. This is a song I associate with that period of time, I listened to it a lot, and idk, it just resonated with me. I grew up Catholic too, and so did Conor Oberst, and neither of us are super religious, but he has references to Catholicism in some of his songs and it’s something I connect with and it’s cool.
NewNightmare7 At The Bottom of Everything: Another song off of I’m Wide Awake It’s Morning...it’s like y’all know it’s my favorite! This song is cool, it starts off just him telling a story with no music, and then the music starts, and it sounds so upbeat, but the song is basically about dying and stuff. Sad/serious songs but in a pseudo upbeat way is kind of my thing. This song is soooo good lyrically too, one of those songs that I always want to quote my favorite line but I know I’d end up just listing half of the song. You did good :P
Mathboy9 Something Vague: First person to send a song off of Fevers and Mirrors, and it’s my favorite one off that album as well! This song is sooooo good. I don’t know if you picked it randomly, or if you listened to a few and chose what you liked, or if you actually already knew the band, because I know you’re someone I have discussed music with a bit before and I know you have pretty broad taste. Anyway, this song is amazing, the lyrics are so good, but it’s like...written so casually and conversationally, like he’s literally just talking to someone, not actually writing a song, and it’s cool. Ugh I love this so much “and I hang like a star, fucking glow in the dark for all those starving eyes to see” and “but now I’m confused, is this death really you and do these dreams have any meaning? No, no I think it’s more like a ghost that’s been following us both, something vague that we’re not seeing” <3
blazermaniac94 Poison Oak: Another song off of I’m Wide Awake It’s Morning, and I don’t know if this is just a weird coincidence, or if I told you at some point this is my favorite song and you remembered. But it is my favorite song (technically tied with some other songs, but I love this so much and often refer to it as my favorite if someone asks me), and I am happy someone sent it. It’s heavy, and a little dark, and I love it so much. “And I never thought this life was possible, you're the yellow bird that I’ve been waiting for. The end of paralysis was a statute, now I’m drunk as hell on the piano bench, and when I press the keys, it all gets reversed, the sound of loneliness makes me happier”
Absol Personal Non Grata: Oh you did well! This is another song from Down in the Weeds, and it’s also one of my favorites (and also a song I pick to listen to while I play tengaged challenges lmao idk what is wrong with me, but you know, many things). The flow of this song is so good though, and of course the lyrics as always. “Made a life of deception and passive aggression, going to scream when I sing, going to die in the ring, turn me on you’re a knockout, get up onto my cloud do your worst to me now before I change my mind”
_Matt I Believe in Symmetry: The only person to submit a song off of Digital Ash in a Digital Urn, and you picked a good one off the album, I like the halfway point where it kind of sounds like he’s chanting just listing everything off. You get to the next one down the line. You get to the next one down the line.
