Look at the Sky by Porter Robinson
3pi14159: The 80s was known for digital-sounding and electronic synth-pop music. And once I read that, the first artist that came to my mind is Porter Robinson. My friend showed me this song and I think this song is really unique. I thought I was gonna hate it at first but here I am submitting it. The lyric video is funky but I find it really cool and it kind of fits the electronic vibe of the song, which makes me love the song even more. On top of that, the song is actually very meaningful to me which is part of the reason it’s one of my favorite songs of all time. It’s all about inspiration and that while things might not be going well in your life, you know that you can “make something good” and make next year better.

I can understand your approach this round. Yes electronic synth-pop was popular in the 80s. However, I don’t think all modern electronic synth-pop songs have 80s inspiration, and this song is no different. There isn’t really anything about this song that reminded me of 80s music but I still really like this song. It’s definitely in line with the kind of music I personally enjoy. This manages to get 3 points from me because one person didn’t submit and one person submitted a song that wasn’t on theme and wasn’t a good song.

I don't really get a strong 80s vibe from this, but damn I can't give it last place. It's not phenomenal, but it had me more intrigued than some others. Mediocre points for mediocre song!

I think you knocked it out of the park this week! I’m glad to see you’re getting your strength back, at least in my case. I absolutely loved the production and the instrumentals, and the voice in the chorus was incredible. I found myself not loving the voice in the verses as much, but it was still a lovely song! I felt deeply personal while still sticking to the theme. I actually felt you hit the theme the best because it was to submit a modern song that drew inspiration from the 80s, and this is exactly that. Also, thank you for your descriptions every week as they help us understand why you picked the song and, at least in my case, help your ranking increase. Great job!

J4ckWilko: So I found this song randomly from going through playlists and i've never heard of these before but I was told to go completely out of my style of music so I have done! I find this a really endearing song and I hope it does me well

You’re very smart for picking a song from a movie that is quite literally set in the 80s. I’m not really sure that I’d want to listen to this song outside of this game but I still think it is a great pick for the theme. It definitely is catchy and has a fun message. Overall the song was just okay but it didn’t really stick out to me so I don’t have too much to say about it, but it’s catchy and fits the theme very well so it is in my top two.

Okay this is actually decent for what it's worth. I'm not particularly a big 80's music fan, but this really works for me. It has just enough twist to that classic sound to make it more than worthwhile for me, good work!

I think you absolutely smashed the theme for me this week. It sounds like it’s directly from the 80s, and as an added bonus, I didn’t hate the song! I normally tend to not like older music, but I found this being an exception. I liked the instrumentals, his voice was nice, and the overall beat & flow was very catchy. I’m impressed! You listened to finding a more underground artist, and in my case, it paid off for you this week. Well done!

Ouch…this was a miss for me. What is with this season and repeating artists?? I didn’t exactly love the first Kah-Lo submission and I like this even less. I guess there are some traces of 80s house music but the 80s connection doesn’t feel very strong to me. This feels way too modern to really have 80s ties and overall I just don’t like the song.

I thought I was going to strongly dislike this, but it grew on me pretty early into it. I got fairly invested as its both catchy and a song that you can easily get into. I did kind of lose interest near the end, but overall the highs of this song deserve some recognition.

I’m guessing you were emulating the dance aspect of the early 80s in this submission? When the song started playing, I said, “I’m going to love this.” Unfortunately, it did not live up to my expectations. I didn’t think that there was much range, and that the flow was very similar the whole time. It kind of got repetitive and boring around halfway through for me. I could definitely see this being played at a dance club but I feel like it’s a song that you’d put into a mashup so you don’t have to listen to the whole thing. Best of luck this week!

Okay I really don’t want to give this my top spot because there is no description and I feel like we are so deep into the game that it’s almost inexcusable, but this is STRAIGHT OUT OF THE 80S. These instrumentals are incredible and this is one of the catchiest things on the planet. I was bopping my head every single time I listened to this. This is an absolutely fantastic choice for this theme.

This song was alright. Honestly about all I got for you. It was definitely better than expected, but it got old real quick. It wasn't the complete generic sound, which was a nice bonus, just didn't feel like a great song all around.

The thing I enjoyed the most about this was probably the video. It seemed very camp and some of her facial expressions she made during the scenes were hilarious! However, I didn’t find myself enjoying the song as much. I felt that the background instrumentals were too loud, and it actually sounded like the voice wasn’t supposed to be at the forefront of the song. I prefer songs where the voice is clearly louder than the instrumentals and ones where it’s clear that the voice is front and center. I do think you fit the theme but unfortunately I just didn’t enjoy the song very much <33
