takeaways from the election

Nov 4, 2020 by Patrick319
while we don't yet have an official winner, a couple of potential takeaways:

1. polls appear to have been off yet again (at least at state levels, and TBD on the national level). clearly, this means that what most pollsters did to troubleshoot after their 2016 failures (ie. adjusting for education, including more non-college educated voters in their samples than they did in 2016) wasn't enough to accurately predict the result of the election. this could lend credence to the "shy trump voter" theory that a lot of conservatives loved to claim, who knows.

2. democratic appeals to moderate republicans mean jack shit. having john kasich appear at the DNC and endorse biden for instance clearly has little effect in encouraging moderate republican voters to vote across party line. democrats need to focus on turning out the liberal vote, not appeasing a bunch of conservatives that aren't going to vote for them anyway.

3. millions of americans are either willfully ignorant to the failures of the trump administration, deeply racist, and/or extremely stubborn about crossing party line and voting split ticket in certain instances. the fact that trump wasn't crushed in a landslide after the last four years is SCARY. legitimately terrifying.

4. the cult of trump is real. in 2016 I gave a lot of trump voters the benefit of the doubt, and argued that they voted trump because they felt disenfranchised and abandoned by the democratic party. while I still don't think democrats do ENOUGH for the working class, trump clearly has shown to care very little about them either. yet trump still did well in rural, poor/middle-class working areas of the country particularly across the rust belt. this tells me that it's all 100% trumpism. nothing will change these people's minds. they've been brainwashed by trump and the republican machine into thinking democrats = communism = bad.

“ nothing will change these people's minds. they've been brainwashed by trump and the republican machine into thinking democrats = communism = bad.” -this... not exactly. I voted for him in 16. But my mind was changed this election. I don’t think democrats are bad. I don’t think republicans are bad. I don’t think trumps is good. I don’t think Biden is good. I think everyone sucks. But one sucks A LOT more than the other imo.
