The oligarchical Tengaged system?

Sep 23, 2009 by Netopalis
Haldo,
As I'm sitting here waiting for my current game to end so that I can start another one, I have a thought - it seems to me that the entire system that Tengaged has set up seems to be organized to put new players at a disadvantage.

New players cannot enter all games - they can only enter Castings which will generally take away their money rather than let them win anything.  They can only play in one at a time, and if it ends, they cannot start another one until the previous one finishes, regardless of whether they were voted out early.  They cannot gain T$ quickly because they don't have access to the higher-paying games and their blogs are not generally as widely read.  All of this coupled with the fact that it's tough to break into a social game like this make it rather difficult for all but the most dedicated newbies to establish themselves.

Doesn't this seem a bit counter-intuitive?  Generally, social networking sites thrive on new members, yet Tengaged seems to be putting them at more of a disadvantage than at least on an even playing field.  Does Tengaged not want new users?  The argument for inactivity at higher game types doesn't really hold water to explain all of these - particularly the low payout for castings and the waiting  until the game has finished, even if you're no longer in it rule.

What would I recommend to fix the site?  Firstly, I would modify the rule so that you can play again once eliminated - this preserves the fact that newbies cannot get into too many games at once without making it so that they have a large number of days where they simply can't do much of anything.  Second, I would modify the payout to add more karma further down the line, or perhaps make it so that karma is given out based on an activity rating.  Finally, I would encourage a "new players" section or category of blogs - perhaps there newer posters could "be discovered", if you will.

Well, yeah, but just because it's only a website doesn't mean that we can't provide constructive criticism or encourage it to improve - in fact, if you want it to grow, the correct response is just the opposite.

We all had to start from the beginning.

But just because you went through some ridiculous hurdles isn't much of a reason to expect anyone else to go through them.

Well here's the thing.

You have to make 10th or higher. to enroll in two games. And if you do worse than that, I think Rando expects you to make enough blogs to get 1 T for another castings. And I like reading new people's blog's ove older people's blogs. As for rookies, trust me, you don't want to join until you get some knowledge about the big alliance's under your belt. And I have no clue why we can't enroll back to back in our first few games, but hey, there must be a reason.

Ah, good, some actual discussion on here!

I appreciate your willingness to read new players' blogs over old ones!  That being said, you have to agree that older players have the advantage in the blogging game simply because they know more people.

As for entering rookies without knowing about the big alliances, are pre-game alliances really that big of a problem in these games?  Seems rather counterintuitive to me....Still, though, shouldn't that sort of thing be my choice and not the site's?

Finally, let me just say that I find the whole "There must be a reason..." argument to be infuriating in all walks of life.  Assuming that an authority figure has a reason for acting as they do is a major fallacy and leads to the blind following of something because "it's the way we've always done things".  I want to encourage you - challenge authority - you'd be surprised at what you find out.
