Two years ago tomorrow my dad's dad passed away. At that point we thought we were going to lose them both. I was never close with my mom's dad. He lived in North Dakota and i am from Ohio. I visited him when I was four and said i would never go back (yes as a four year old i said i would never go back) however when i found out two years ago that he was in a bad condition and wanted to see me, I decided to go with my mom to visit him back during spring break of freshman year. (First scare was during fall exam week freshman year). Then i was able to return that summer to visit him after he was moved out of the hospital and into a nursing home. I am so thankful that i was able to visit him two times as an adult. He was never really there for my mom, but he is still blood and knowing where i come from is very important. I will miss you grandpa Gene!
I'm sorry for your loss. Both my grandfathers died before I was born and all I hear are stories about how awesome they were. I wish I could have met them just once, it's great that you did go to see him even with his relationship with your mum.
