Sacrifice is the underlying tennant of the Christian faith, literally the core principle. John 3.16 For God so loved the world he gave his only begotten son that who shall ever believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life. Essentially according to the Christian faith the reason sinners can still inherit the Kingdom of Heaven is due to the fact God sacrificed his only son and Jesus sacrificed his life to die for everyone sins. Neither was forced to hence the sacrifice, without this theme the whole Christian faith falls apart. That is why sacrificed is seen in all sorts of smaller underlying themes all throughout the New and Old Testament
This is also behind the spirit of Lent Christians sacrifice stuff that is trivial in retrospect to God having to sacrifice his son and Jesus sacrificing his life, and celebrate on Easter Sunday when Lent ends.
