Is Anybody Out There?

Any Pink Floyd fans? Well, here is an interesting poll for you all.

Personally, I enjoy Pink Floyd's early work more than anything, but their 1977 album, "Animals" is probably my favorite album ever. The songs on the album tell great stories, and are very well written, lyrically and musically.

Recently, I have been thinking about all of their "epic" songs, or simply their long songs. Their early ones were predominantly instrumentals, while many later ones sometimes incorporated stories into them, and were just as good.

So the question here is, which of Pink Floyd's "long" songs is your favorite? The best?

I am going to be including all of their songs over 10 minutes long, and hell, I'll include "Interstellar Overdrive" because there are versions of it being longer than about 9 and a half minutes.

Here is the list:

1. Interstellar Overdrive
2. A Saucerful of Secrets
3. Sysyphus (All Parts)
4. The Narrow Way (All Parts)
5. Atom Heart Mother
6. Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast
7. Echoes
8. Shine On You Crazy Diamond
9. Dogs
10. Pigs
11. Sheep

Like I said earlier, "Animals", being my favorite album, is going to get a lot of love from me here. I think if I were to choose a favorite out of that list, it would be "Pigs", followed very closely by "Dogs". I think, after that, it would be hard to choose. If I were to make a list of my top 20 Pink Floyd songs, all of those 11 would be on it.

The other question for this poll was which one is the best. Just like the previous, everybody will have a different opinion on it, and there's a good chance that the answer may be the same for both. I really believe Pink Floyd's early work was superior to anything else they have done, musically. I am a huge fan of Progressive Rock, and "Interstellar Overdrive", from the first album, shows you just how experimental they were, and even how much they have changed over the decades.

I am not sure if I would count Interstellar as their best though. I think the two songs on the list from the album "Atom Heart Mother" are. Those would be the title track and "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast". Many people think the latter is not very good because I guess they find it humorous or something? The last 3-4 minutes make that song. Listen to it.

"Atom Heart Mother", the song, is a several part instrumental. As with literally all of Pink Floyd's long songs, I could listen to this one all day. There is nothing too amazing about it, but it's so impressive. I believe it is the song that really set up Pink Floyd for success in the future. I know they changed their style soon after, but the song is a classic.

So...What do you guys think? I would have loved to write something about all of these songs, but if you actually read this far, or cared enough to open this blog, then they wouldn't need an explanation.

gagaluv AlexRyder Comfortably Numb is decent, but it's definitely not as good as any of the ones I listed. Plus, it's only about 6 minutes, not enough to make the poll. But thank you for the input!

TBIbetch I think I understand. I feel like even if you were a casual fan, you would only know songs from about 3 different albums. They would be their most popular ones, and you probably only know their most popular songs. I am not saying you would like some of their other stuff either, but personally I prefer their earlier, more experimental work, just like the ones I listed in the blog. I would understand if you didn't like that either. It's an acquired taste (in music).
