Don’t be mad by this critique, but when I took Photography classes in college, I took a Black and White photography class. And like on Week 2 we went to a cemetery as a class for that week’s project. And this image is kind of like a dead ringer for a girl in my class’s submission. She kind of got dragged. So take all that for what you will.

FYI in this instance I’ll allow you to say “I’m all three” because obviously this is the same model and they just overlaid different shots. This is kind of just okay to me. Because you’re so low to the ground and everything is overlaying, I can’t really see much of what’s going on with the body. Great emoting though!

So when I first saw this image I was like woah! And then didn’t really return to it. Anyway now that I am writing the critiques, I looked at the editorial and saw this image more up close and have now discerned this is actually a FEMALE model. Well, androgyny is in evidently! I won’t penalize you for it because clearly I couldn’t even tell when I first saw this image as well but forward try not to make this mistake again. Actually going back to this image… Amazing! Love the lighting, love the dark atmosphere. I think the pose is perfect, very controlled, as if you were the one to desolate the world yourself!

I think the actual posing in this image is really good. The way you actually seem kind of unbothered by all the hands works because it’s almost like a feeling of resignation, or maybe unphased if you’re an optimist. I guess my one big complaint is I don’t like the black and white editing on this photo. It’s all… very gray. Not really enough contrast and not enough of a range of colors on the photo. Like if you look at the histogram (basically the range of colors) of this image, here’s yours:

See what I mean? So because of that, this image is lacking an “oomph.” I actually got bored and edited the photo myself and this is what I came up with

Which to ME looks much better. Now I am expecting y’all to go out and edit the photos yourselves? No, absolutely not. But I do think this is a good thing to keep in mind when you are picking out your submission.

Posing is fine, emotion is fine, but I’m not super wow’ed. I think the styling is actually quite ugly and ventures into costumey to me, but I won’t lie and say it’s a bad photo.

Love the emotion, love the setting, love the atmosphere. This feels very cinematic to me. I’m kind of mixed on her just standing there. However, I do see the counterargument that because her emoting is so over the top, doing too much with the body would be tacky.

We love a bold stance on gender. This is very unique and fascinating! I love the color combination, love the hair, and ADORE her gaze! It’s like she’s a haunted spectre coming to me in my dream and letting me know she can read every thought. The slouch with the bent head is good because it doesn’t become a shot of “model standing there” or “model posing too hard.” My one question… What's going on with the feet?
