Ok heres my opinion about the speculation in 2012. The mayans predicted that world would come to end as we know it on December 12, 2012. These are the only people who have ever thpught that the world would end in 2012. This is not a worldwide practiced thing.
What backs up the mayans?
Well they correctly predicted the different settings of the moon (full, half, etc.) for the future 200 years. They correctly predicted the spanish conquest of the Inca civilization.
What strange strings are going to happen on December 12, 2012?
All the planets will be in a straight line with the sun, which only happens evey 750,000 years. In switzerland, the hadron collider is set to go off, which has 1% chance of creating a black hole that would engulf this world killing everyone in it.

The mayans didn't predict the world ending, they predicted that a new something year would begin. :S
I think that everyone will be here on December 22, 2012. I noticed how it wasn't a big thing until a few years ago and now its everything 2012. If something like the end of the world happens, I'm heading to Africa.
