ALERT ALERT another overly empathic post shilling the newest reality show that has intrigued me INCOMING!1!!
(spoilers ahead -- if you haven't watched GO DO THAT!)
So I am on discord the other day and receive a pm from a friend about the most random thing ever that I was not clued in on the relevant pre-season press.
THE CREATER OF THE GENIUS HAS CREATED A NEW SHOW... AND THE FIRST FOUR EPS ARE OUT *RIGHT NOW*
Naturally, I dropped everything and sprinted in high heels over to the high seas to watch the first ep. The format was revealed and honestly I was a bit soured on it because it just seemed like The Genius-lite and I am NOT a Society Game truther so I was already taking this with a grain of salt. The cast however is amazing (which imo is due to the fact that they stuck to the genius 1 casting archetypes to a T even down to the professional StarCraft player lul) and the even gender split is already a huge step up.
However, once I got to episode THREE it CLICKED. The way the stakes got RAISED and the main match became a fight to the death was so intense. The absolute look of desperation in See Woo's eyes from the moment the minority alliance realized their personal rules would be useless I feel really was over emphasized intentionally to portray the shift in tone in how the viewer is now watching. The fun was OVER and at LEAST one person is dying. I no longer missed the Death Matches, who needs Indian Poker anyways? I was on the edge of my seat for a full hour.
Highlights include -
-See Woo's aforementioned DESPERATION in her eye and her scrubbing to the finish line via spending her pieces.
-Dong-Joo SLAYING the Prize Match (and the mind fuck of how they figured out certain details like the current date, like I'm sorry The Genius Netherlands didn't hit the same reusing the old games)
-The minority alliance scrubbing along
-THE AMBASSADOR OF PRISON rolling an escape prison dice at the exact moment she needed to claim the last possible spot to ensure her safety
-The return of the over dramatic Korean flash forward and flash back editing style I just love how they are crafting a STORY and I am ready for the ride!
For a reality show that is quite literally all about the challenges there's a surprising amount of SOCIAL development and I love the new emphasis on the social experiment that the Genius lacked and the Society Game went TOO hard on. Its is kind of the perfect balance and it this show is just all around refreshing four episodes in. Other shows *smiles at the camera* SHOULD TAKE NOTES!1!1
I am waiting PATIENTLY to binge the next 5 episodes on Tuesday and after reading this SO SHOULD YOU!!
