Although characters in Edgar Allen Poe's Annabel Lee and Shirley Jackson's The Haunting at Hill House are controlled by the fresh wounds of the death of a loved one, each story still provides a message against holding onto the dead.

Put quotations around the book title.

I would put quotes or italics on the titles of the works. and maybe add a bit more onto the message, as in why it is being given
