Comments:
Corey is very engaged in the class work. And he is one of the very few students who keeps up with the weekly blog posts. It's not really the quality of Corey's work that is the problem, but the difficulty he has in terms of collaboration.
There are two components to the problem. First, Corey does not work well in groups. He often dominates conversations, pushing his own ideas and notions, without listening carefully to others. He seems to have difficulty sharing the floor with others. This is also evident in scene work or improvisation where he takes over in a way that draws attention to him without contributing to the purpose of the scene. He has difficulty following instructions during ensemble building exercises. During class discussions his comments are often irrelevant or self-centered.
The second component is an apparent lack of sensitivity to the feelings of those around him. There have been times when he was physically rough with a partner without being aware of it. He has also been rough with people's personal stories, to the point where some of his partners do not feel safe revealing personal about themselves to the group. Several students in the class have requested that they not be partnered with him in group projects.
The Theatre for Social Change class requires a high degree of collaboration and personal sensitivity. Well, actually, all theatre work does, but this class more than most.
Corey is new to Goucher and has not yet become acclimated to the college culture or the culture of the department. I urge him to listen more, practice synthesizing other people's ideas with his own, engage democratically, and to be thoughtful about other people's feelings. If he were to practice "pacing," and worked with others in ways that were less self-absorbed, he would be better able to contribute to the course work.
I am just about to cry for ages andychuck08 the people in this class personally attack me and "redneck" is offensive to them, LMAO. He is the department head as well. I'm thinking about dropping my theatre major now because of this.
