*August 23, 2017*
Two weeks after the horde took over Revco and the community moved into the nearby military base, the survivors worked towards ridding Revco of the dead. Once the dust settled, it was clear that the town was no longer the safe haven it once was. Buildings destroyed, bodies galore and the blood of loved ones smeared along the walls. Richard and Meredith stand near the closed gate and look out at what remains of Revco.
MEREDITH: Hard to believe this was once a town full of people.
RICHARD: Now it’s a dump for the dead. All my work…gone.
She places a hand on his shoulder and gives it a squeeze. Just then Bruce, Braxton, and Krista walk up.
BRUCE: We should head back soon. The noise from the clean up has drawn some of the dead.
BRAXTON: We’re just waiting for the ones at the gravesite to return.
MEREDITH: Is Reina…
BRAXTON: She’s helping Penny say goodbye.
Krista turns her head towards the gravesite, where some of the survivors stand around mounds of dirt with a makeshift cross as a marker. Braxton places his arm around her and moves his head down to kiss her head.
BRAXTON: You should go. He meant something to you.
KRISTA: I…I already told him goodbye.
BRAXTON: Krista.
She looks up at him and her demeanor begins to soften.
BRAXTON: Kevin seemed like a good kid.
KRISTA: He was a pain in the ass.
Braxton and Krista share a chuckle before she looks up at him nodding. Then, she makes her way towards the gravesite where Danielle and Barret stand around a marked grave. Meredith walks over and nudges Braxton in the arm.
MEREDITH: Let’s go join Reina.
The two make their way towards the gravesite as Bruce and Richard look on.
BRUCE: So many people died.
RICHARD: They died because I failed them.
BRUCE: Richard, come on man this isn’t your fault.
RICHARD: I should have been more careful. I allowed that viper to blind me.
BRUCE: Ofelia fooled everyone, not just you.
RICHARD: I was the closest to her. I should have seen the greed in her eyes.
BRUCE: She’s been in that cell for the past two weeks.
RICHARD: That’s exactly where she will stay.
BRUCE: Even though she’s having your grandchild?
Richard sneers at Bruce.
RICHARD: Especially because of it.
:::::SCENE 2:::::
At the gravesite, Emmalina kneels down by a mound of dirt and gently places a hand on top of it. Tears stream down her cheeks as she struggles to speak.
EMMALINA: Dillon…I’m so sorry. I’m sorry for everything. I wasn’t the best wife to you both before and after this outbreak. You were my rock. You were my everything…even though I didn’t always express it. I…I ruined us. I ruined you. I will never, ever forgive myself.
She continues to sob as she buries her head in her hands.
----Cut To----
Standing over Jeremy’s grave, Reina holds Penny in her arms as Braxton and Meredith stand beside her. Reina wipes away tears as Meredith rubs her back.
REINA: He was finally reunited with his daughter. After all this time he thought that she was gone. All this time he was just surviving. Getting up every day believing his family was forever lost. I just…I don’t know what to do.
Meredith pulls Reina into a hug and looks her in the eyes.
MEREDITH: Jeremy sacrificed himself for Penny…for you and the baby. He trusted you to take care of her. You’re not alone, ok? We’re here for you, the baby and Penny. Jeremy was a quiet man, but he was brave. You, Reina, you helped him to keep his hope alive. Without you, he could have easily given up. Then, he would have never been able to spend his final moments with his daughter. We’ll get through this. For Jeremy.
The trio gives the grave one last look before turning to walk away. Over Reina’s shoulder, Penny looks back at the grave and waves.
PENNY: Bye, daddy.
----Cut To----
As Chance places a flower on top of Zelma’s grave, Zale stands nearby watching. Chance wipes away a tear and smiles.
CHANCE: I know you wouldn’t want me crying over you. But…you were the only family I had. You saved me. If it wasn’t for you calling out for help, I would have ended my life right then and there. You came into my life when I was too afraid and too alone to call out for help myself. It’s almost like you knew. You knew I needed saving.
Chance begins to cry harder motivating Zale to put his arm around him.
ZALE: I’m so sorry.
CHANCE: Zelma…she was fire, man. She had this spirit…unlike anyone.
ZALE: I wish I had gotten to know her more.
CHANCE: I wish I had too. These couple of months weren’t enough. Goodbye, Zelma.
The pair gives the grave one last look before turning to walk away.
----Cut To----
Jessica and Maverick stand looking down at the graves of Ashley and Vincent. Maverick struggles to hold back tears as Jessica wipes away at her cheeks.
JESSICA: It should have been me. Ashley was always the good sister. She cared so much about people, even if she didn’t know them. She was perfect. If anyone should have survived all of this…it was her.
Maverick continues to stare at Vincent’s grave before eventually breaking down.
MAVERICK: Damn it.
JESSICA: It’s ok to cry.
MAVERICK: I feel like a part of my soul is gone. He was my twin. Born together, baseball together, graduation together. But this…this is the one thing that truly separates us.
Jessica wraps her arms around Maverick and cries into his chest while he continues to stare at Vincent’s grave.
----Cut To----
Danielle adjusts the marker for Kevin’s grave as Barret and Krista stand close by. For a few moments, the group is silent until Barret clears his throat.
BARRET: Kevin, kid, I’ll miss you. See you on the other side soon enough.
Barret turns and walks away as Danielle and Krista watch.
DANIELLE: He’s so weird.
KRISTA: We need to keep an eye on him.
After a few more moments of silence, Danielle touches Krista’s shoulder before turning and walking away. Once alone, Krista beings to sob.
KRISTA: I shouldn’t have let you stay at that house. I should have forced you to come with us. But then I think about how much you were grieving. I think about how you needed time to process everything. Plus, no one could really force you to do anything because you were stubborn.
After a few moments, Krista turns around and takes a deep breath before walking away.
----Cut To----
Miles and sage stand looking down at to mounds of dirt where Naomi and Tessa are buried. The two guys stand silently before turning to walk away.
MILES: Tessa would want us to keep going.
SAGE: Yeah…I know. I know.
Miles looks at Sage and sees how visibly disconnected he is.
MILES: You ok?
SAGE: Yeah. I’m good.
The two continue on their way back towards the trucks.
:::::SCENE 3:::::
Standing near the military trucks at the entrance of Revco, Eden looks out at the town and takes in what remains. Todd walks up to her and looks around with her.
TODD: Weird to be leaving this place after just getting back a few weeks ago.
EDEN: Yeah.
He turns to her and puts his hands on her crossed arms.
TODD: Are we ok?
EDEN: What do you mean?
TODD: Ever since…ever since the truth came out about the baby, you’ve been distant
EDEN: I just don’t know what to say or how to feel.
TODD: Try. Please.
After a few moments, Eden pulls away from Todd.
EDEN: Knowing you has changed me. It’s made me stronger and allowed me to see my full potential. I love you. I really do. But, I don’t know if this is right.
Todd looks at her confused.
TODD: What are you saying?
EDEN: The world isn’t what it used to be, Todd. It’s about survival.
TODD: I’m not losing you over this baby.
EDEN: That baby is yours, Todd. That baby is what you have to survive for.
TODD: I don’t even want that kid. Not with that evil bitch.
EDEN: Don’t say that.
TODD: It’s the truth.
After a few moments of silence, Eden wipes away tears.
EDEN: You have to do everything you can now for that baby. This isn’t me telling to pick one over the other. This is me letting you focus on what is important. That child’s survival is more important than anything we have. I’m sorry.
Todd struggles to hold back tears.
TODD: So that’s it? Are you going to make the decision for me?
EDEN: I’ll always love you. I’ll always be thankful for everything you taught me.
She steps closer to him and presses her lips against his. They share one last passionate kiss before she pulls away and walks off towards the other survivors.
RICHARD: Alright, let’s head back!
Everyone begins to load into the trucks and head out of Revco. Meredith watches in the rearview mirror as Bruce closes the gate to Revco as Richard drives next to her.
MEREDITH: Think we’ll ever be back there?
RICHARD: It’s possible. But for now, we have a new home.
Meredith looks ahead and they head back towards the military base.
:::::SCENE 4:::::
A couple of hours after their return to the base, the survivors gather in the large auditorium as Richard and Meredith stand up on stage. As those seated quiet down, Richard steps up to the podium.
RICHARD: Earlier this morning we officially closed down Revco. That was a difficult move to make, but a necessary one. It’s no longer as livable as it once was. Here on this base, things have taken time to adjust. Over time I believe this community of survivors will be stronger than ever. With that said, I have met with the rest of the Revco board and we have decided to move forward with our mission of exploration.
Murmurs begin to fill the auditorium as Meredith takes to the podium.
MEREDITH: As proposed last week, the board will be sending out a group to explore the larger area. We don’t know what’s out there, but we do know that there may be other survivors and potentially a safer place to live. With no access to news, there is no telling what lies beyond these walls. With that said, there will be two groups. One heading to the east, and one heading to the west.
The voices from the audience begin to rise as Richard steps back to the podium.
RICHARD: We have met one on one with those who expressed interest in this mission last week. The two groups are as follows. East group will consist of: Zoe, Aisha, Corey, Miles, and Sage. West group will consist of: Eden, Zale, Chance, Danielle, and Libby.
Todd quickly looks towards Eden in complete shock.
TODD: What? Are you leaving?
Eden turns and walks out of the auditorium as the audience continues to get louder.
MEREDITH: The groups will be leaving in an hour as to still have daylight.
Meredith and Richard walk backstage.
MEREDITH: I hope this is the right thing.
RICHARD: It is. We need to know what’s out there. If I could I would be going myself, but I need to stay here and oversee things. They will only be out there a few weeks.
Richard walks away leaving Meredith alone with her thoughts.
MEREDITH: Just a few weeks.
:::::SCENE 5:::::
Todd rushes up to Eden who is in her room packing. He closes the door behind him.
TODD: When were you planning on telling me!?
EDEN: Todd.
TODD: No, you’re not going out there.
EDEN: Todd.
TODD: This is crazy. Why are you doing this? Is it because of the baby?
EDEN: Todd!
Todd stops talking and looks at her wiping away tears.
EDEN: This isn’t about the baby. Or maybe it is. I don’t know. All I know is that this is what I want to do. I need to get away from this whole situation.
Todd scoffs.
TODD: Away from me?
EDEN: That’s not what I meant.
TODD: Then I’m going with you.
EDEN: No.
TODD: Too bad.
EDEN: Todd. Just stop, ok. Please.
Todd struggles to fight back tears.
TODD: Don’t go.
EDEN: I’ll be back in a few weeks. We’re only going to travel for 7 days and then take the next 7 to return. Two weeks. That’s it and hopefully, we’ll have good news.
The two stand in silence for what feels like an eternity. She finishes packing her bag and turns to face him.
EDEN: When I get back…we can talk more about us. Ok?
TODD: I’m not giving up on us. I don’t give a fuck how much you try and push me away…
She pulls him close and kisses him deeply. In that moment their complicated situation fades away.
EDEN: Two weeks.
TODD: Two weeks.
She grabs her bag and walks out the room leaving Todd watching her exit.
----Cut To----
Krista pulls Danielle into a tight hug as Braxton and Libby stand nearby.
KRISTA: If it wasn’t for this damn one arm situation I’d be going with you.
DANIELLE: Who are you kidding, you would be unstoppable even with one arm.
The two laugh before tears begins to fall down their cheeks.
KRISTA: Be careful out there.
DANIELLE: I will. We both will.
Danielle smiles at Libby, who smiles back.
BRAXTON: Do you have everything you need?
LIBBY: Medical supplies, weapons, water, food, and clothing.
DANIELLE: She’s very organized.
The foursome laugh before Braxton and Libby walk off giving Krista and Danielle a moment alone.
KRISTA: Who would have thought that we’d make it this far?
DANIELLE: I’m going to miss you. But I’ll be back. You don’t have to worry.
KRISTA: I know. You can take care of yourself.
DANIELLE: Are you going to be ok here?
KRISTA: I’ll be fine. Tomorrow Braxton is going to take me to visit my sister’s grave.
Danielle reaches out and squeezes Krista’s hand.
DANIELLE: Be safe.
KRISTA: I will.
Danielle smiles and turns to walk away.
----Cut To----
Alone in the infirmary, Emmalina organizes some supplies as Corey walks in with a bag over his shoulder.
COREY: Hey.
She turns and sees him before turning back to what she was doing.
COREY: I know you don’t want anything to do with me, but…I just wanted you to know how truly sorry I am. What I did…I will never forgive myself. I hurt you and…
Emmalina turns to face him with fire in her eyes.
EMMALINA: And you killed Dillon! If it wasn’t for you stealing the key to the cell…just leave!
She turns back to what she was working on as he somberly exits. When she hears the door close she begins to sob.
:::::SCENE 6:::::
Standing outside the military base, the sun is starting to set. Eden, Zale, Chance, Miles, Sage, Corey, Aisha, Danielle, Libby, and Zoe stand side by side staring out into the great unknown.
ZOE: Alright, remember travel out for one week and then head back. Let’s go!
Zoe begins to march east with Corey, Aisha, Miles, and Sage following behind her. Eden watches and lets out a deep breath.
EDEN: Two weeks.
She begins heading west causing Zale, Chance, Danielle and Libby to follow closely behind.
:::::SCENE 7:::::
Inside the boardroom within the military base, Richard sits at the head of the table with Meredith, Bruce, Holli, and Braxton sitting around near him.
RICHARD: With Zoe out on the mission, Holli will be taking her seat on the board temporarily.
BRAXTON: So what happens if they don’t return in two weeks?
RICHARD: If we have the available bodies, a search party will be sent.
MEREDITH: If?
RICHARD: Yes, if. Hopefully, it won’t come to that.
After a moment of silence, Bruce clears his throat.
BRUCE: So what about the prisoners?
RICHARD: What about them?
BRUCE: What will we do with them?
RICHARD: They will stay exactly where they are for the foreseeable future.
HOLLI: Finn was more dangerous with Darren in power. Now he’s…
RICHARD: I don’t care how weakened he is. I don’t trust him.
MEREDITH: What about Ofelia? You can’t leave her down there.
RICHARD: I can and I will.
MEREDITH: Richard, she’s pregnant.
RICHARD: She still is the reason so many lives were lost.
BRAXTON: If I may, I think that she could still be under watch in a more comfortable place.
RICHARD: No, she will stay in the cell.
MEREDITH: Richard.
He turns to look at Meredith, who gives him a stern look.
MEREDITH: This isn’t a dictatorship.
He slightly sneers at her before breaking out into a smile.
RICHARD: Of course. We will take this to a vote. All in favor of keeping Ofelia in the cell?
Richard raises his hand. When no one else does he scoffs.
MEREDITH: All those in favor of letting Ofelia be under watch in a safer location?
Meredith, Bruce, Holli, and Braxton all raise their hands causing Richard’s blood to boil.
RICHARD: Seems we have a majority.
MEREDITH: Seems so.
The two glare at each other for a moment, before Meredith stands up.
MEREDITH: I’ll go find a better place to keep her.
Meredith exits the boardroom as Richard continues to sit silently enraged.
----Cut To----
Ofelia walks into a room with a bed, shower, sink, and toilet. She takes a look around and turns to face Meredith.
OFELIA: Better than that disgusting cell. So you voted for this?
MEREDITH: The majority of the board did, yes.
OFELIA: Why?
MEREDITH: Even though you are a murder, you are still pregnant.
OFELIA: I didn’t think that mattered given how you threw me against the wall.
MEREDITH: Things change.
Ofelia steps closer to Meredith and sneers.
OFELIA: What’s your end game? I know you have one.
MEREDITH: Just make sure that baby is taken care of.
OFELIA: You don’t give a shit about this baby.
MEREDITH: I just feel sorry for it. Having a psychopath as a mother.
Ofelia smiles and then walks to sit down on the bed.
OFELIA: After this baby is born what will happen? Death penalty?
MEREDITH: You’ll just have to wait and see.
OFELIA: I guess we will.
Meredith turns and walks towards the door. She stops and turns to Ofelia with a smile.
MEREDITH: Enjoy these next few months. Once that baby is born, all bets are off.
Meredith exits and closes the door behind her. As she locks it, Ofelia gets up and looks through the small rectangle window in the door. In silence, she watches Meredith walk down the hallway. She stands back and holds on to her pregnant belly with fear written all over her face.
:::::SCENE 8:::::
Walking down a deserted road, Eden and her group listen for the sound of the dead. After a few moments, she stops in her tracks.
ZALE: What’s wrong?
EDEN: Do you see what I see?
Zale follows her gaze towards a pickup truck that crashed into a ditch.
ZALE: Is that the same truck?
EDEN: It is.
Eden glares at the truck for a moment.
EDEN: She’s out there.
DANIELLE: Who?
ZALE: An evil person.
LIBBY: Evil?
CHANCE: That’s an understatement.
DANIELLE: Wait, who are you talking about?
Danielle looks towards Eden who remains silently staring at the pickup truck.
EDEN: Chandler.
