It is not illegal to pretend to be someone else online. It could very well violate the terms of service of the sites the person uses, but it does not violate a law. ... These people are breaking specific laws. But the catfishing, in and of itself, is not illegal in the US.
I was very careful on how I worded everything, its nothing personal, but a trolls gotta do what a trolls gonna do.

It depends on what you do with the online identity. Defamation of character is illegal - ie pretending to be someone and claiming that person does illegal things/is a criminal.
