The final two lines in “Song”, says, “They who one another keep alive, ne’er parted be.” Is a more complicated then it first appears. The lines describe how any two people who love each while being alive on earth will never be separated until they both are deceased. In line 27 of ”Song” Donne uses the oxymoron “unkindly kind” to tell of his love’s sorrow. The intentions of her crying is kind because it expresses the loved ones sorrow and how much she cares and loves him, But at the same time he finds it unkind because he does not want her to cry of be hurt, and feels as though she is hurting and showing him.
Donne relates love to gold in saying how it is malleable. In the same way that when someone puts pressure on gold it flattens and never breaks apart, similar to true love when under pressure never breaks or shatters. He also compares the characteristics of refined gold to true love as both being perfect in the sense that they are both flawless and overall perfect. He relates the fixed foot of the compass to his love who he must temporarily leave as he is out traveling like the mobile part of the compass they are always intact and still together. Once the purpose of his departure is complete they are once again reunited and there short time of separation creates a circle, in the spiritual world the circle represents true love. In the way that a compass creates a perfect circle their strength created perfect love and he is back to being with her in life.
In “Holy Sonnet 4”, the speaker is thinking of all the people of the world, alive and dead, in the first eight lines and how they should put their faith in God and not underestimate him. The first octet is where God is being worshipped, thanked and praised. The in the sestet he realizes the power of God. Resulting in his plead to God for forgiveness and a pardon.
Death should not be proud for many reasons. Death is never mighty and death is never dreadful. Death will come to an end for everyone. Once one dies they are sent to heaven or hell where they will live eternally and never have to face or deal with death again.
In “Sonnet 10” the speaker of the poem describes himself as being free, and unprotected. But now as he sees God he wants to be “imprisoned.” He means it like he once was a free man who was bad and did what ever he pleased. Now he wants to be imprisoned by God and live for God and only God, under Gods will, rather then his own will.
When Donne states that “all mankind is of one author.” He is saying one person creates us all, which most would believe to be God. Donne says, “we are all one volume” he is saying we all are of the same thing but are part of something larger, which would be the world. Affliction is like treasure in the sense that they both can bring one from God. Affliction can cause someone to lose trust or despise God, treasures can take someone’s attention from God, so they completely lose faith in him. But if one looks further into both cases they can see that the affliction could be a positive experience sent from God in order to strengthen them and keep faith in God. Also if one looks into their treasures they can learn to trust God and appreciate him more for what they have received from him. In literal means it is saying how you use your money and what currency it is does not matter as long as you use it for the good of God then it will bring you closer to him. It is a metaphor for your life what you do with your life, and how you go about doing it are tribulations for God and if you do the proper things for him it will bring you closer to God.
