For this episode you each had to submit a music video to a song that fell under the 'alternative' genre. I do want to say that our critiques and rankings are our personal opinions and tastes and we may disagree at times. If we feel like something does not fit, then we judge it as we see perceive it. It's okay to disagree with our critiques and get angry. That's what makes us strive to become better human beings. To learn from one another's mistakes and take other people's advice and criticism.
𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐑𝐄𝐖: I guess I’ll start with the video first since that has way more intrigue for me than the song. The video is a fun concept, with like them being apart of a video game. A very hard video game might I add. The parts where they showed with the band members in the sky could’ve been a little more thought out, and wasn’t really my fave. The song I found kind of boring, it just seemed like often times I found myself really paying attention to the video and not the song. I liked the like beat, tempo, and tone of the song, just not really the lyrics so much.

𝐉𝐄𝐅𝐅𝐑𝐄𝐘: I remember this song being played all the time back in the day. I was never really a fan of it, but I never disagreed with listening to it. It has a somewhat smooth flow and the only part of the song that I know is the chorus. The music video is quite interesting. I like the video game aspect of it.

𝐑𝐘𝐀𝐍: I don’t typically listen to this band, and they aren’t really the first thing I think of when I think of alternative music. This song was fine, but not one I’d want to listen to again on my own. I must say I loved the video, though. As a gamer, I found the video to be a fun, visually marvel. It reminds me of the animation used for the arcade machines at my local bowling ally, and let’s just say I have a lot of fond memories at that place.
𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐑𝐄𝐖: Um, hmmm. Not really a big fan of either the song or the video here. The video had some sort of cool elements like the dolls and stuff interacting with different things. Not really a big fan of the band just driving around the city, but I mean the city itself looks cool. Uh, the song was okay. Nothing too special for me, probably wouldn’t listen to it again but it was a decent song to listen to once.

𝐉𝐄𝐅𝐅𝐑𝐄𝐘: So I recognized the music when it started but I wasn't sure from where. It wasn't until the chorus started that I realized what the song was. I know the song only from the chorus. I'm still not sure how or where I know the song from. I don't believe I've ever listened to Muse. The song is okay, but that music video scared me towards the end. Damn evil teddy bears.

𝐑𝐘𝐀𝐍: So… I actually chose the theme this round, and I wanted to hear some alternative music… but alternative or not, I don’t think I enjoy songs that are heavy on rock. This song isn’t necessarily bad, but it’s not one I would ever listen to voluntarily. I didn’t really understand the video either… there was a lot going on and the way it was shot made it confusing. Were they on a model of a city? Is that why there were figurines everywhere? And what was with the puppets? It was just confusing and I couldn’t really make any sense of it.
𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐑𝐄𝐖: I don’t like Maroon 5, like at all really. I don’t know exactly why, like some of their songs are fine, but I think Adam Levine’s voice gets on my nerves sometimes. This song was okay, and I have actually heard it before which shocked me. It had some decent vocals and wasn’t really a bad song, just not a song I’ll ever listen to willingly. As for the video, very much a soap opera, but it really had no intrigue for me, nothing majorly interesting happened, but I did like the soap opera story being told. Just thought there could’ve been a little more intrigue.

𝐉𝐄𝐅𝐅𝐑𝐄𝐘: Another song that I only knew the chorus. I actually love Maroon 5 and know quite a bit of their songs. Adam Levine has one the best male voices in my opinion. I wasn't too familiar with this song, but like I said, I knew the chorus. The music video film somewhat like a telenovela or a daytime soap opera and it wasn't that bad. I usually don't watch soap operas, but this short music video was enough to enjoy.

𝐑𝐘𝐀𝐍: I do enjoy some of Maroon 5’s songs… however, I feel that this one was just average at best. It’s not bad, but it’s not the kind of Maroon 5 song that I would want to listen to. The video felt like a soap opera… I really didn’t find it entertaining at all.
𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐑𝐄𝐖: I have a decent amount of Lana Del Rey songs on my playlist on Spotify and this is a song I haven't added, nor have I listened to it, I probably still won’t add it as I’d definitely skip it after hearing it a few times but it wasn’t necessarily a bad song. Both the song and video give me old Hollywood vibes, not sure exactly why but I just get those vibes. But yeah the chorus for the song I really enjoyed, but there really wasn’t much interesting anywhere else. The video also lacked interest for me and I think I could’ve done without the video to still get the same effect from the song.

𝐉𝐄𝐅𝐅𝐑𝐄𝐘: So I found the song and the music video to be a tad boring. I had to do some research on whether this song was 'alternative' because it didn't really sound that way to me. I actually did find that it is labeled as 'alternative/indie' so at least I can give it some points. I just could not get into the music video. There wasn't a lot to it and there was nothing that kept me interested.

𝐑𝐘𝐀𝐍: So… me and the other judges have discussed whether this is alternative music or not. Personally, after doing research, I would say this falls more under the category of psychedelic rock rather than alternative rock, therefore I do not believe this song matches the theme. This means I unfortunately will not be awarding any points. If it makes you feel better, I wasn’t a fan of the song or video anyway and would’ve most likely given them low scores.
𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐑𝐄𝐖: Now, I’m not sure what this song will get ranked from my fellow judges as we had a debate on whether or not this was alternative or not, and while I personally believed it was, as Billie is just alt to me in general, I could not find any source that said it was alternative. Until after a bit more searching was I able to find two sources claiming this is an alternative song. So that’s good, but anyways moving onto the actual critique. This is probably overall one of my least fave Billie songs, only because I don’t like the chorus and this song is mostly chorus, I do enjoy the rest of the lyrics but there is so little of this song that isn’t chorus so it’s hard to give it high marks. Also the video, this video is not in a traditional YouTube format, so you have to hold your phone vertical(?) which is a little odd for a music video… and well, I really don’t know if I like this video either. It’s basically just her standing with spiders, like everywhere. The shot with the spider coming out of her mouth is a classic, and I do remember it being talked about a decent amount when this song released, but it’s still the only thing semi interesting about the video.

𝐉𝐄𝐅𝐅𝐑𝐄𝐘: This music video just gave me the wiggins. So I had to do research on this song too because it didn't sound 'alternative' to me. It sounded more pop. I did find an article stating that Billie Eilish and her brother FINNEAS wanted to go more of 'electric-pop' with this song, rather than 'alternative' and that's how I felt the song was. The music video was just creepy and gross. I hate spiders; I actually hate all creepy crawlies. It was just uncomfortable to watch and also the format of the music video was a little offputting.

𝐑𝐘𝐀𝐍: Unfortunately, this is another submission that does not match the theme. This song falls more under the category of electropop and is not considered alternative music. It’s a shame because I actually enjoy Billie Eilish’s songs and probably would’ve given this a good amount of points had it been used for a round where the theme would’ve matched.
𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐑𝐄𝐖: I think like literally everyone has heard this song at least once, but very likely more than once. It was the song that was always on the radio when it came out. But despite how many times I, or someone else may have heard it - I seriously doubt anyone knows this whole song start to finish. The only memorable parts are the chorus of course and Kimbra’s solo for me. Like the chorus I fully know, and Kimbra’s part I know like half of it at least. But the beginning? Even still I could not tell you what was sang. The video confuses the hell out of me. Nothing really interesting or nothing that really pertains to the song, it’s just them standing in front of an art wall and getting stop motioned painted to match the colors behind them. I guess that’s pretty cool, but it just doesn’t match with the song nor is there anything else really happening it’s just very flat.

𝐑𝐘𝐀𝐍: Now THIS was the kind of alternative music I was hoping to hear this round! I love this song so much… I used to listen to it all the time as a kid. There’s so many unique sounds and instruments used throughout its runtime, and that kind of differentiation, that kind of alteration in the typical way modern music is supposed to sound, is why I’ve grown up to appreciate alternative music. The video is also very memorable. It’s a simple yet effective concept, and best of all, it’s visually striking and is sure to be remembered by whoever happens to watch it. Great submission!
