Welcome everyone to your second round of judging. This week, I asked you all to deliver a song that reminded me of summer, and some of you really brought the heat while others melted under pressure.
You four had my least favorite songs, and one of you will be going home this week. We’ll start by giving out the top contestants' critiques.
LovelyKiss - “disco tits” by Tove Lo
LMAO this song was a bold choice, but I absolutely love it. The lyrics in the chorus are easily my favorite part about this song, I mean they really tell the narrative. Does this song scream summer to me though? Idk, it’s a stretch. Don’t get me wrong I absolutely love this song, it’s just not a song that instantly makes me think of summer.
NicoleF - “Cool for the Summer” by Demi Lovato
This might be one of my favorite Demi songs ever? I mean I’m not gonna pretend like I know Demi’s whole discography to confidently declare that, but the concept of Demi singing about her lesbian fuck buddy she had for one summer is absolutely hilarious to me. Plus this song is catchy as hell and instantly makes me think of summer. An absolute hit, good work this week!
Turkeylover - “Club Tropicana” by Wham!
I love the instruments in this, the trumpets juxtaposed to the piano was really pleasant to hear together. They feel like they shouldn’t go together, but it works beautifully. I think this has a really great vibe to it. I feel like I should be drinking some fruity drink by a pool when I listen to this. It’s a shame that you won immunity when clearly you didn’t even need it this week, but I’m glad you’re continuing with a streak of bops.
Delete2544: “Malibu” by Kim Petras
I wasn’t fully sold on this song from Kimberly when I first heard it, but after a few more listens it grew on me a lot. It definitely gives me summer vibes, and I would love to listen to this poolside somewhere when this virus goes away. This was the perfect Kim entry for this category imo. Good work!

FromAWindow - “A Beautiful Sea” by Sing Street
Pretty bold of you to submit a song from a movie soundtrack after the person who went home last week submitted two movie soundtrack songs. I found this track to be pretty boring and forgettable. It definitely feels summery, but I don’t think there was a lot of substance to this song that makes it stand out with everything else this week.
GiGi10 - “Island by the Sun” by Weezer
If I’m being honest, I’ve always found this song to be quite boring. Like I really don’t think there’s anything super interesting about it musically or melodically. It definitely addresses the prompt, but this does feel a little like a normie pick for me. This was not your week I’m afraid.
anthousai - “American Teen” by Khalid
I don’t really know what to think of this song. This song is neither interesting melodically, nor does anything about it scream summer to me aside from the music video (but this isn’t a video contest). I liked the beat, and I could see myself listening to this if someone else put this on for like atmosphere or whatever, but this genuinely feels like a song you would hear at an American Eagle or Forever 21 and not think twice about.
Ilysuiteheart - “Heatwave” by Wiley
Oh God… This was absolutely a mess. I see that this song was released in 2012, and it really shows. Ms D’s part is extremely repetitive and basic, and Wiley’s delivery on this track is just giving me a headache. I do get summer from this, but this is like the song that drunk girls would stumble-dance too while holding a drink in those ridiculously long plastic funnel glasses (idk if I’m describing that correctly but I can envision it in my head). This was not good at all.

FromAWindow! I don’t know what it is about the movie soundtrack songs y’all have been sending, but so far I have yet to like a single one. I promise I don’t HATE movie soundtracks, but I usually do not find the songs people make for them all that interesting. However, you have advanced to the next round.
