Insanity's Song Contest - Week 1 [RESULTS]

20thDec 2, 2020 by Insanity
https://i.imgur.com/Ca11xIq.gif

Welcome everyone to your first judging of Insanity’s Song Contest. I promise as a host to give you back your results within 48 hours of the deadline (I’ll try to aim for 24 but you never know).

Before I begin, I just want to applaud you all for submitting your songs on time. Too many times I see a gross chart where there are like four or five DQs. I’m glad that you are all taking your duties seriously thus far, and I hope this is a testament to the level of activity I should expect to see throughout the whole season (although I get it if life gets in the way this is a silly blog game on a dead website lmao).

When I call your name, please step forward.

The bottoms of the week. I’m sorry, but you have the lowest scores.

That means that

rodrigueseve
ManniBoi
GiGi10
turkeylover

Congratulations! You have the highest scores of the week. We’ll start with the highest scores critiques

Rodrigueseve: “XS” by Rina Sawayama and “Toutes Les Machines ont un Cœur” by Maëlle

I mean XS was #2 on my Spotify 2020 wrapped and Rina was subsequently my #1 artist of the year so I don’t think I need to tell anyone how much I LOVE this song. I didn’t even realize it was anti-capitalist until I really dissected the lyrics and I stanned it even more afterwards. We really don’t deserve her. I thought your personal taste song was pretty cute. The synths in the chorus were really intriguing. It doesn’t blow me away after my first listen, but it was a really original choice in terms of personal choice, and I wouldn’t mind listening to it again. Overall, you have an absolute BOP and a song that was just aiight, and I think you know which pick brought you to the top.

ManniBoi: “Hung Up” by Madonna and “Banana” by Anitta & Becky G

Obviously this Madonna song is a classic. The beat for this is really infectious, and it honestly stands the test of time. It’s not my favorite Madonna song, I certainly don’t think this song needed to be five and a half minutes long but WHATEVER she’s fucking Madonna and that’s really my only valid complaint about the song. For the personal taste song, I actually LOVED this. It was a little manic at times, but that’s what I loved about it. It was so upbeat and really made me want to dance. I certainly loved your personal taste song more, but your entry for the letter category wasn’t bad either.

GiGi10: “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” by Green Day and “Cocoa Butter Kisses” by Chance the Rapper

The letter entry gives me so much nostalgia that I’ve tried to bury LMAO. I vividly remember bopping to this song as a kid, and even as an adult even though I would probably NEVER put this one unprompted, but it’s still something I’m pretty happy about hearing again. As for the personal taste song, I think this was probably the best rap song sent this week. Chance’s delivery is very interesting here, and I was pretty invested overall which doesn’t always happen for me with this genre. This comment I’m about to make won’t affect your overall score but I do appreciate that your songs were not only not safe choices, but two almost opposite genres, it showcases your diversity and what you can bring! Keep it up.

Turkeylover: “TT” by TWICE and “Good Look For You” by Gavin Turek

I think no matter what type of Twice stan you are, everyone can agree that TT is one of their most successful songs. While I think these girls have produced better bops over the years, this is still a song that I thoroughly enjoy whenever it comes on. Your personal taste entry, GIRL, this was pretty fierce. The beat was infectious, and her vocals sounded great here. For a song I never heard of before, this really gagged me. You brought two pretty fierce entries overall turkey, keep up the good work!

I’ve made some decisions! The runner up this week is

Rodrigueseve! Although you submitted a song that was literally my #2 streamed song of 2020 (don’t know if you knew that or if it was a lucky coincidence), I don’t think your personal taste song was strong enough to win. Congratulations, you’ve advanced to think next round.

Congratulations, you are the winner of this challenge. This means that you will receive immunity for next week, but you will still be required to submit an entry. You’ve advanced to the next round, amazing job.

ManniBoi, GiGi10, great work from both of you. You have both advanced into the next round.

Unfortunately, one of the bottom 4 will be going home tonight. Who will it be?

Anthousai: “Compensating” by Animé and “body bag” by Machine Gun Kelly and Bert McCracken

I’ll start with the entry that matters more, because that was EASILY my favorite of the two. I’m not always too keen on this genre, but I thought this was pretty decent. The chorus is my favorite part, especially when that heavy bass comes in. As for the verses, while there were some clever lines, I thought the delivery of them was a bit sloppy at times. As for your personal taste song… This SCARES me. This sounds incredibly dated, it reminds of bands like 3OH!3 and All Time Low that I wish NEVER existed, and the fact that this was released only a few months ago is laughable. I know songs like these certainly have an audience, but this feels very run of the mill for that genre.

Letal: “Dark Paradise” by Lana Del Rey and “mary magdalene” by FKA twigs

I’m really not a huge Lana stan at ALL. I do admit that there are a few of her songs that are pretty damn good, but this is certainly not one of them. Also why the alternate version instead of the studio? Like I feel you have to be a complete Lana obsessed STAN to get into this and I’m unfortunately not one of those girls. I think you were only a tad more successful with your personal taste entry. FKA twigs has a distinct style, and it certainly has its charm, but I just don’t see myself listening to this type of music all the time. I’d have to REALLY be in the mood for something like this. It’s interesting how you chose two very chilled out tracks, but I certainly like your personal taste entry more sonically.

Christian_: “Bound to You” by Christina Aguilera and “Flashlight” by Jessie J

Don’t hate me, but I’ve actually never seen Burlesque. Maybe this would have more meaning to me if I actually saw the movie, but since I haven’t, upon first listen I’m not too impressed. Xtina’s vocals sound GREAT here, and they definitely save the song to an extent, but I find the sound a bit dated now in 2020. I DID watch Pitch Perfect 2 but if this song was in it I definitely don’t remember it. Similar to Xtina, I don’t think this song as a whole was very interesting and also something that hasn’t aged well. It’s interesting how both your songs came from movie soundtracks, I just don’t know how well that’s going to bode for you, cause I’m gonna tell you right now I am NOT a girl that watches a ton of movies. I just think movie soundtracks are generally not super great overall (except in a few rare cases).

Olympia: “(Sittin’ On) the Dock of the Bay” by Otis Redding and “I’ve Never Been to Me”  by Charlene

LMAO These were some bold choices Miss Pia. I think your letter entry was very chill, although definitely not something that I could see myself listening to today. I thought your personal taste entry was gonna slap a little harder, but I think I actually preferred your first entry to this one. I don’t mind that you’re submitting much older songs than everyone else, I just don’t know if this was a great combination if that was the route you wanted to go on.

The first contestant that is safe is…

Anthousai! You were an example of your personal taste song really dragging you to the bottom. However, I wasn’t mad at your other song. You’ve advanced to the next round.

Letal! This was a very close call, but I see slightly more potential in you. Congratulations, you have advanced to the next round.

Unfortunately, this means that Christian_ is our first boot. I really wish I could’ve seen what more you had to offer, but neither of these movie soundtrack songs impressed me. Thanks for participating.
