My 5 Y/O Nephew Told Me He Hated Me

Jun 7, 2018 by BambiBoo6
Guess I'm doing something right.

To explain the incident, I found the empty package of strawberries that were supposed to be for him and his sister hidden under blankets, and he said he ate all of them because he was hungry and didn't want his sister to have any. So I scolded him and told him that was really mean and selfish of him. Then he started crying (which he does if you look at him wrong) and told me he hated me.

My feelings are hurt by it, but at the same time I don't really care because I was doing what I was supposed to be doing as his aunt. And in my opinion, if kids you are in charge of, be it your own or nieces and nephews, don't tell you they hate you at least once in your life, either you're a fantastic parent and have awesome kids, or you're doing something wrong.

I love my niece and nephew very much, but I am not here to be their friend. This morning, like many days because since I've been out of work I help watch them in case of schedule overlaps, I was their guardian, and in that role I have to scold them if they do wrong. That's part of my job. If they don't like that I correct them when their wrong, and want to hate me for it, cool. Someday they'll understand.

Little kids are cry babies and it's like they know what to say to get under your skin and to make you feel bad. Literally have the same problem almost with cousins.

Kids say that kinda stuff all the time. If you did nothing about it, it would be a lot worse, because they need to learn from a young age.
