The letters are for scores, you know who everyone is/where they are but not how much gold they have

but wouldnt u know right after the first round if no ones gold goes down then u got the burgler

and if two peoples gold went down the the burgler is in village 2...

Gold counts are revealed every other round, so after round 2, 4, 6, etc.
