Disco vs Grunge

I decided to take a different approach to this challenge and think outside the box of typical opposites. Seeing as this cycle is all about pop culture I thought of how ingrained music is in pop culture and though of what genres of music would be "opposite", and Disco and Grunge are about as opposite as it gets. Disco had an explosion in popular during the 70s and was known for being hyper produced dance music.

Grunge, on the opposite end of the spectrum, emerged in the 90s from the punk movement which sought out to do the opposite of everything Disco is. It deconstructed, focused on more raw vocals and instrument sounds, throwing production to the wind, and was an underground genre that slowly gained popularity.

So Disco quickly gained popularity for it's dance, over produced sound compared to grunge which slowly gained popularity which focused on raw vocals and instruments and didn't want to be over produced.

Rags and Riches

In this photoshoot, I'm contrasting wealth. For the rags photo, I went with a realistic representation of a casual look. For the riches photo, I think wearing an all white suit helps demonstrate a pristine, elegant look.

An interesting detail in these two photos is that they are both flashing their wealth through jewelry. Just because the first look's budget is cheaper, that doesn't mean the goal to look nice disappears.

B&W vs. Color

In this photoshoot I wanted to create a glamourous and elegant atmosphere with both of the images. I understand that some people will consider this as a safe choice, but I believe this is a modelling competition and being modelesque and presentable comes first before anything else.

For the first image, I'm showing you a vintage noir, 1950's style Eastern glamour with a black and white imagery to establish this. The second image gives you a modern establishment of Eastern culture with the fashion and styling, along with the setting. I wanted to show Shanina as the true beauty she is and I feel both images do this well and I hope you agree.

Well, i'm a game addicted since child, and something i noticed in some RPG's are the initial pets, usually Fairy and Imps. Fairy are the ones who heal and protect, they are soft and fragile, while Imp are the ones who do damage, more intimidating.

For the fairy shot i'm taking an different perspective, something more conceptual but aesthetic and i think it works nice.

While for the Imp shot i'm playing an different perspective from the first one, red light representing the intimidating and intense vibe.

You can see both photos are connected since the Fairy is looking down and the Imp one is laying on the ground, in my mind, the fairy is watching the unfortunate moment from the imp who is not ok with this situation.

For my photoshoot today I decided to go with the pairing for living in the city versus living in a more native like setting.

He Cong - Happiness vs. Paralysis

This was particularly an eye-opening challenge as I didn't want to go the regular route and instead tried to progress as a model to push myself further. I've noticed so far from my portfolio that I do tend to produce shots that are more so serious and if u want to categorize it as emotionless. With this challenge, I'm providing a shot with real happiness and laughter while still keeping that professional look but with a hint of innocence behind it. Some have different perspectives of the other extreme of happiness and you would immediately think sadness right? But there's something much deeper to sadness, what causes it? It's fear, fear of something so abstract that in once second could paralyze you. Not physically, but emotionally and mentally. When you do realize this it is uncontrollable! With my second shot, I bring paralysis to life, it's that intense moment in which you have no idea on what to do next. Paralysis is messy and destabilizing ...

Jourdan Dunn | Cheerfulness vs. Depression |

I decided to go with this theme because as hard as it is to talk about I can relate to this.
I deal with depression on a daily and I hide it with my smile and sometimes constantly joking with others to put off that I'm a cheerful person but even surrounded by all these smiling faces deep down inside I constantly feel alone.
It's a known fact that most depressed ppl put off this cheerful persona to throw ppl off of how they are really feeling.

putting aside what both photos represent on their own, There's a story here that I connected both photos with. Say for instance how someone portrays to others that they are this cheerful person but on the inside they feel alone and ready to give up. You could show others you feel like photo #1 but on the inside you are photo #2 That's the contrast between the two photos.

First I’d like to apologize for being late, I’ve been a busy man lately lol.

But In this photo I’m showcasing dark, dull, and kind of just an ‘over -it’ expression In one photo, and the other I’m showcasing a more bright, exciting, and happy expression.

I feel as though this also helps to show the judges - though the judge of this is someone who has yet to judge me yet. But I wanted to show that I have more than one emotion and can have more of a range than just bored.

It feels wonderful to be back on this series and seeing such a talented group of models stand before me. For those that aren't aware of me, I was considered on both my seasons a front runner and yet underestimated a long the way. One of my defining powers that helped me through out the entire competition was that I had a very good way with my words. I can model a potato sack and argue that it was in protest of capitalism and the judges LOVED it.

I mention this because with this challenge I wanted you guys to give me something that I could immerse myself in with your own words. And let me tell you, you guys did just that. I am so amazed with the collages presented before me and I can't wait to see what the photoshoot has in store.

So let's get to the comments shall we?


First things first, this challenge asked for COLLAGES and that was my biggest want when pitching it. I wanted a side by side shot of differentiality. Not two separate links. So with that being said I'll address those models first.

WANG YIBO (SeongWoo) - I'm kind of upset that you didn't follow the rules to a Tee only because if this was side by side YIBO!!!!! I would have died! The contrast in color attracts me to both photos and the different positions of your side profiles also brings life to the shot. I'm not even upset about it not being full body because I completely got the story. The only critique I can really conjure is that this is not a collage.

LUKA SABBAT (coolKat) - Luka, similar to Yibo on the matter of this not being presented as a collage. However, with the prompt of the challenge, this presentation feels completely contrasting. I wanted contrast pieces that fits like glue and I wouldn't view these as such. I don't want to individually like one photo over the other but each as a whole. In this case the second photo is where you shined best.

REECE KING (IceBear) - Reece, I love the theme. I however, am not a fan of this not being a collage and I'm not a fan of the riches photo you brought forward. Good concept but I couldn't connect to both photos or imagine them together. Yet I do love that you chose to stay realistic instead of dramatizing what "Rags" would be like.

Now onto the true contenders for winning this challenge:


SASHA PIVOVAROVA (natesclove) - The FLARE in this shot is to die for. I love the approach that you took with this challenge. My eyes immediately dwarts toward the fashion choices that you chose with this collage. Now my only critique that I'll personally give you and others may disagree. I don't mind a little photo editing. If your second shot was just a little bit more zoomed in the back and forth of both pictures would have sat nicely.

TANYA DZIHBILEVA (Sebbers) - I love that you also decided to focus your gaze upon the fashion culture of this industry. Opposites do attract and that's why we call it guilty pleasures. So we love someone that has taste in disco and grunge music haha. Focusing on the shot I love that it does scream "look into my eyes" and that's all I'm doing. I love that once side feels so empty and the other feels so filled.

SHANINA SHAIK (hazbaz94) - This is a beautiful shot! Your face is also giving me MODEL and that is a good thing in a competition like this. I would have liked possibly a better theme description because I believe you delivered however this is so much more than black and white vs color.

MALAIKA FIRTH (spinner) - Malaika you did not give me a story and ma'am I'm a little upset about that. I love stories because I want to be drawn into your vision. That is your goal as a model is to give us imagination! The shot is flawless and it does connect to each other but it's lacking my attention.

HE CONG (humanwebjet1) - This is an example ladies and gentlemen of how you present two different shots and let each shot speaks for itself as a unit. The irony in both shots is that the shots represent what they represent but they could also be reversed and represent the latter. That's creepy yet and talented. Thank you for understanding the assignment.

JOURDAN DUNN (txashaun) - TALK ABOUT DIFFERENT! This shot scared the living shit out of me and I'm not even gonna lie. Yet this is also such a real representation of mental health. That shit is scary. I love the story and I can see the connection. I'm going to say the same thing I said earlier to Sasha, editing could have added just a smidge more but well done.
