I've saved people who were gonna get voted out, by making an alliance with them. I also siumeultanepusly did that to break up someone elses. So it really depends but obviously in this case it saved my friend.
Yes and no... In castings an alliance is useless if someone doesn't get nominated. But obviously having one helps get rid of your main competitors and especially if some of your alliance is getting nominated you can save them.
