"Ocean Eyes" was released as Eilish's debut single on SoundCloud in 2016. A music video was released on March 24, 2016, and a video of Eilish performing a dance to the song was released on November 22, 2016. Artistry and influences
Eilish and her brother Finneas, who produces her music,[32] collaborate on songwriting.[33][34] She said Finneas, who also performs with her on live shows, is her partner in making music.[33] Eilish and her brother "like to completely make up things and become characters. We like to have songs that are really fictional."[34] Eilish said a number of the songs they write also derive from her and Finneas' experiences: "A lot of the time we go through the same stuff, so it's a mixture of what he's going through and what I'm going through. It's kind of half and half: a lot of them are fictional and a lot of them are not."[34]

On the way she and Finneas write songs, Eilish said:
We try to write what everyone is thinking, but no one says. We try to say stuff that doesn't have to be that deep: it could be something random, like "I feel sad," but you say something way deeper in a certain way that makes sense, but you haven't really thought about. […] We try to be really interesting with the lyrics and really conversational".[34]

Finneas said when he writes songs for Eilish, he aims to "write a song that I think she’ll relate to and enjoy singing and empathise with the lyrics and make her own."[35] When he writes with Eilish, he tries "to help her tell whatever story she’s trying to tell, bounce ideas off of her, listen to her ideas", and use a language that fits her voice telling the story.[35]

Eilish primarily listens to hip hop and R&B. A big fan of rap music, Eilish looks up to and wants to collaborate with rappers such as Tyler, The Creator, Drake, Earl Sweatshirt, A$AP Rocky, and singer Miguel.[34] She grew up listening to the Beatles, Green Day and Avril Lavigne.[34] A major musical influence for Eilish is Lana Del Rey.[33]

On her image, Eilish said:
I'm really different from a lot of people, and I kind of try to be. I don't like to follow the rules at all. […] If somebody starts wearing something a certain way, I'll wear the complete opposite of that. I've always worn what I wanted to and always said what I wanted to say. I'm super, super out there. […] I like to be remembered, so I like to look memorable. I think I've proved to people that I'm more important than they think. […] I'm kind of intimidating, so people will listen up. I'm kind of scary. A lot of people are just terrified of me. I have a resting bitch face.[34]

Personal life
On November 27, 2018, after videos emerged online of a compilation featuring Eilish experiencing tics related to Tourette syndrome, she posted on her Instagram account confirming Tourette syndrome was a part of her life.[36][37]

On drug use, Eilish told The Guardian: "I have never done drugs, I've never got high, I've never smoked anything in my life. […] It’s just not interesting to me." [38]

Eilish, along with her family, is vegan.[39][40]
