| Ranking EMOTION by Carly Rae Jepsen |

3rdSep 1, 2019 by purplebb4
imageI have listened to this album dozens of times in the past few days or so, and it is a masterpiece of the highest quality. It's the quintessential example of a pop album, and its cult classic status is so so so well deserved. Tbh even if it came out in 2015, it probably is my Album of the Year, simply for how mesmerizing and incredible it is.

Now, onto my ranking of the songs on the album. I cannot put them into tiers, simply because they are all amazing. Every song has something going for it, and there is not a single weak link. This however, is based on my taste and how much I've listened to each song. I'll probably have thoughts written next to each, so enjoy!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

15 - Let's Get Lost:

- While this is still better than 80 - 90% of pop songs, in comparison to the others on this album, it just doesn't stack up. The beat is very slow, and while the lyrical payoff is complex and endearing, the music behind it sometimes doesn't live up to it, resulting in a very slow paced song. It's still incredibly good, just doesn't beat the rest xx!

14 - When I Needed You

- On my original listen, this was much, MUCH, higher. But the more I repeated the album, the less impactful it was. The chorus is spectacular, but while everything else around it is still good, it doesn't have as much WOW.

13 - Gimmie Love

- I think were this flounders for me is the constant repetition. While I feel like its core to the meaning of the song, alongside the backing music, it still doesn't live up to my personal preference for more faster pop. However, there is a beauty behind the song, and I fully appreciate it <3

12 - Favorite Color

- LOVE, LOVE, LOVE almost everything about this song. HOWEVER, it feels kinda forgettable lmao to me. Like I still can recall it in clarity and get the lyrics stuck in my head but it can mesh with other songs on the album so I need to relisten to it in order to get back its distinct feel, and thats why it has to go this low >=[. The first bonus track to fall as well!

11 - Black Heart

- The first to fall followed immediately by the second! When I first listened through Emotion, this was consistently dead last. However, it grew SO much on me. It's by far the most unique song on the album, from chorus, to lyrics, to beat, it stands out no matter what. I feel like its a song that'll be severely underrated by most, but I really can see this being in my top 6/7 in the future, if I ever update this LMAO!

10 - Your Type

- I'm not the type of girl for you, and I'm not going to pretend .... Ugh, this song. Absolutely adore it, but it just cant be put any higher because I simply just LOVE the songs above it more, even though this has no flaws in SIGHT.

09 - All That

- This may be my most controversial placement, as a lot of people consider All That to be the heart of Emotion, and I do agree. It's a fascinating and heartwrenching song, one of the few very slow paced ones that I will eagerly listen to any day of any week. However, because it is so slow, it doesn't give me as much bang for my buck as I'd like it too, if you know what I mean. If I was judging purely without my personal taste factored in, just logistics, this would probably be Top 3, but life doesn't work that way.

08 - Warm Blood

- This comes after one of my favorite songs on the album, and its the perfect detox. Warm, Inviting, Slow and still fast placed. The raspy undertones are amazing, and combined with the whimsy of the chorus helps create a saga of a song. Love it completely </333

07 - I Didn't Just Come Here To Dance

- This starts off with THE best line in the album from any standpoint. Its perfect, and if the song kept that beat, it'd probably be numero uno. However, the changing of beats is FASCINATING and really works well with the formatting of the song, and it creates the BEST of the bonus tracks. I think this is a mother track that grows on you, except it really does latch onto you instead.

06 - Boy Problems

- Stan Twitter convulsed over this, so did the 12 year old gays, and so did I. It's perfect bubblegum pop mixed with 80's themes. It's undoubtedly Carly, it's undoubtedly catchy, and it's undoubtedly incredible.

05 - Emotion

- For a title track, I feel like this gets SEVERELY underrated in comparison to what surrounds it, but it IS this album in a nutshell. Wild beats, our pop, and a hodgepodge of lyrics and style that blend perfectly. I completely understand why the album was named after this song or vice versa, and it deserves its place as the cream of the crop.

04 - Making The Most Of The Night

- This is consistently amazing. There is never any dip, never any pitfall in the quality of this song, and its a luxury from start to finish. The wonder "hijack you" repeating alongside the pure pop of the chorus is PERFECTION, and it showcases all of the talent possessed by CRJ. This is also a underrated song, and it DOESNT deserve it. Go listen to it, NOW.

03 - I Really Like You

- Probably another one of the controversial decisions, but this is more so about nostalgia and my taste. This was the song that introduced me to Emotion, the song that mad me want to listen to it. Its sugary, sweet, undiluted, bubblegum pop, and there are no bounds to it. People will criticize it for this feature, but I LOVE it for it. I want to dance as soon as I hear the opening lines, and its catchiness is not at all annoying, but endearing. Doesn't deserve ANY hate </3

02 - Run Away With Me

- Oh, those trumpets. Once you heard them, I think you KNEW this album would be fantastic, and it obviously was. The utter STRENGTH of this from start to finish is astounding. It is everything and more you could ask from ANY piece of music. If I was unbiased, this is #1 no question. It's all thats right in music, and it should have been the lead single, hehe.

01 - LA Hallucinations

- Don't crucify me for this, but I literally could not put this anywhere below #1. Its my perfect pop song. Perfect buildup, a show stopping chorus, and sing along quality and catchiness unrivaled by almost any other piece of music. I could listen to this on repeat for WEEKS and not get bored. It will forever be my #1, forever and ever.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I read the first one and knew there would be a lack of taste on this list... yikes. At least you respect an icon nonetheless.

If you love this, you should definitely check out the Emotion: Side B and Dedicated albums by CRJ. They are just as good as Emotion :)
