CRITIQUE MY IN CLASS ESSAY DUE IN 20 MINUTES. I WROTE THIS IN 20 MINUTES AS WELL, HOW CAN I FIX IT!!??!?!?! ITS ABOUT THE THEME OF SACRIFICE IN “A TALE OF TWO CITIES”

Have you ever felt so close to a human, that you would risk everything you have for them? That relates very much too the main theme Dickens is trying to come across throughout the story. Dickens is suggesting that people cared so much about their family during the French Revolution, to the point of sacrificing themself for their family. A prime example of this is when Lucie went to see Darnay everyday he was in jail, another example is Darnay being saved by Carton from execution. Darnay shows how people are more than willing to sacrifice themself throughout showing what Lucie did, and what Carton did.
Darnay shows how people are willing to lose everything and sacrifice them self by telling us how Lucie waved to Darnay everyday while he was in jail. Lucie had to wait multiple hours everyday just to see her husband when he was in jail. By doing this, she knows she could be seen as a traitor, or an easy new victim of execution, but she simply does not care because she cares about Darnay more than herself do to the circumstances of France. Dickens shows this when he writes, “We will set him above their mercies very soon… I do so, father, and I send him my Soul with it!” (277). This is how Dickens shows how people were/are willing to sacrifice everything for another person depending on the circumstances and situation.
Darnay shows how people are willing to lose everything and sacrifice them self by telling us how Carton chose to be executed himself, rather then Darnay being executed. Obviously Darnay and Carton weren’t family, like Lucie and Darnay. However, Carton saw how horrible the circumstance and state of France was, and wasn’t happy because of so. Dickens shows this, “It is a far, far better thing I do… I have ever known.” (372). Dickens is showing us through Darnay sacrificing himself that he wants other people’s situations to get better, as he doesn’t see much hope for his. This is how Dickens shows how people were/are willing to sacrifice everything for another person depending on the circumstances and situation.
Throughout the novel, France was never in a good state and a good circumstance. This is very crucial to how Dickens is displaying the theme of sacrifice. Dickens had to show the reader how bad the circumstances were, because otherwise, there wouldn’t be much of a reason for Lucie to almost sacrifice herself for her husband, and for Carton to sacrifice his life for Darnay. These sacrifices in the novel show us that Dickens thinks that sacrificing yourself for a cause, and dying happy, is better than letting bad things around you happen. Dickens showed us this when he makes the reader know that Carton made the right decision when he sacrificed himself, knowing that everyone he sacrificed himself for ended up being happy.
