Do I need friends to survive in the tengaged community?

imageI've already added over 19 people because they've either commented on my blogs, been in my house, or messaged me.
By adding a player as a friend are there any financial benefits like Karma points or TS?

Simply curious because I'm sociable by nature but added perks would be nice!
