Martin Luther King Jr. Jan 18, 2010
imageMartin Luther King Jr. is known as one of the greatest civil rights leaders who ever lived. below will be facts about King throughout his whole life.

January 15 is the birthday of the Rev Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and was declared a holiday in 1983. However, it was first observed in 1986 -- despite the president's saying it would cause a financial burden and a senator's linking King to communism. A popular musician spurred a campaign for the holiday, and a petition gathered so many supporting signatures that it was declared the largest petition for an issue in U.S. history.

Martin Luther wasn't his real name. Even before the name change, his initials were MLK, which explains his childhood nickname.

King was born in Atlanta, a block from the church where his grandfather and father were preachers and where he preached at a young age. But there was still time for fun. King excelled at his game.

King left high school at age 15 -- not because he graduated, but because he scored extreley high on his exam. He then earned a bachelor's degree, a second bachelor's degree and a doctorate. He also had time to join a fraternity. During his college years, King became acquainted with a theory of social protest that he would use to shape the civil rights movement.

King emerged as a leader in his new community of Montgomery, Ala. He was elected to lead a one-day boycott that lasted much longer and won a monumental civil rights victory.

King co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which reached far beyond Montgomery and catapulted the great March on Washington. At the march, King gave his most famous speech. "I have a dream" changed history forever.

King got married on June 18, 1953. The couple had children. King's wife continued his legacy long after his death. She died later after. Despite their parents' nonconfrontational ways, the King children have been in the news because of this conflict.

President John F. Kennedy initially opposed the March on Washington, but King appeased him.
King continued to call for peaceful protests, which drew criticism from a more aggressive leader. King organized Project C against this man and his police force. The police responded with fire hoses, attack dogs and an army tank. After extremely violent police opposition on a day remembered as Bloody Sunday, King continued for rights in america.

Not only did King face police and political opposition, but a bomb was thrown on his porch, a woman stabbed him, and he was arrested many times.

King pressed on and lent his focus to other causes. He took extreme action to showcase the poverty in Chicago.

King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, named Man of the Year, honored by a Jewish organization and a Catholic diocese, and won a Grammy.

On April 3, 1968, King was in Memphis to support an underrepresented group. That night he gave a speech that foreshadowed his death. The following day he was assassinated at age 39.

His last words will never be forgotten in history.

Riots broke out in more than 100 cities upon news of King's assassination. One civil rights leader fueled the anger.

A man confessed to the assassination, but mystery abounds.

Martin Luther King Jr. will be known as one of the greatest civil right leaders of all time, changed the entire world, and became a hero not only to me, but to millions around the world.
