I think it has something to do with getting HoH and not necessarily with winning (i mean getting to the finals)...it will just narrow down your chances to get HoH. In my recent rookies there's this player who always gets negged and gets to the final 5 :)
But it will still depends on how you treat your housemates, if they hated you that much and finds you as threat, they will surely ditch you once you get nommed. but if only one person is doing that (make sure that she/he doesn't have any allies) then it will not harm your winning...
