Do people actually support

May 31, 2020 by Casbah
businesses and homes being destroyed in riot? I think things should be able to get violent but when people's livelihoods are destroyed i feel like thats where a line should be drawn. Especially when minority businesses are being destroyed and their lives being ruined. i don't get that logic honestly

I don’t care about the businesses more than I care about the injustice and the murder

Yeah I agree with you. The people who will be affected most by that are going to be those who are low socioeconomic status or minority populations - since most own local businesses. Most rich / privileged people / major businesses would be able to take a hit and recover with some difficulty but the consequences could be devastating for those who don’t have that luxury.

I understand the importance of protests and riots because if people don’t speak up, the world will ignore the severity of what has been an ongoing issue despite a lot of society’s incorrect belief that racism / profiling has disappeared. Especially since this happens often and this is not the first riot in recent years (so one would have hoped things like this wouldn’t continue but clearly they do).

But what you said is important to note - I’ve lived in a few cities where there are a ton of family-owned restaurants/businesses, owned by ethnic minorities/immigrants with young kids and taking a hit like that would destroy them.

I think if anything, be strategic about it and go to large corporations (I think some people are doing that).
