Well, if you wanna join Survivor, you kind of have to be smart about when you join because joining at the wrong time can really just be a waste of your time.  If you can at least hold your own in challenges, you should be able to make at least 1 merge.

If you feel you're not ready for Survivor, do Frookies or Rookies, but pay attention to what kind of game you are joining.
