I really don't understand it because I'm not a huge threat like some of the other players and I'm nice to everyone :(

Yes, they think you're a threat because you're active. That's why I got 10th in my last rookies. It sucks and, even though you are nice to everyone, they'd rather keep inactive people in the game so that it's easier for them to win :/
