America's Got Talent - Quarter Final 3 Jul 27, 2011
My first blog. Yay. I don't expect anyone to read this, and I'm not going to pimp it out. I don't care that much, I'm mostly just bored. LOL So I'm going to talk about America's Got Talent

* Summerwind Skippers - Jump Rope Acrobatic Troupe
I didn't think I could be entertained by jump-roping, but wow! Impressive! And it's really cool how they are all able to pull off such impressive tricks. It's not like there is one star doing all the difficult stuff and the rest are just skipping rope around him. One minute you've got two of the guys center stage, then the two girls, then the other two guys, then one guy and one girl, then all of them... I do have to agree with Howie though, it's great in small doses, but I don't see it as a Vegas act.

* SH'Boss Boys - Rapping Trio
Adorable? Sure. Talent? No. And then spending half the time singing Jackson 5? That's not even their act! They might as well have came out doing magic tricks. I have no problem with youth acts in the competition, but don't just throw them in because they're cute. I feel terrible saying this, but please get eliminated.

* Mauricio Herrera - Singer/Showman
Ridiculous in all the best sort of ways. And he isn't a terrible singer. Not great, but not terrible. And if you go into it with the mindset that, yes, this is going to be ridiculous then it is great entertainment. I would be able to sit though an hour of that, so long as they served drinks that is.

* Seth Grabel - Magician
Bad. Bad bad bad bad bad. First off, you didn't risk you life. Don't be such a douche bag. Sure, he had a lot more flair than Landon Swank last week. But the best part of magic is the "How did he do that?!" factor. I mean, not only is it easy to figure out on its own, but the cameras pretty much showed you! Let me put it this way. The last thing he said was "Did I mention the boiling hot tar?" He then falls into said tar, and apparently an unspoken part of the illusion was that he used his magic to turn the tar into four of his assistants. But there was tar there! You know this because his suit has black splotches all over it. But that's ok! Because when he gets shot into the pool of water, it washes all the tar off instantly! ... ... ... Come on...

* POPLYFE - Band
Love them! Kehlani is a great singer in her own right. And I think they made a great decision in how they performed their song, because it did give the band an opportunity to show what they can do. And it shows that they're paying attention. In their audition, Piers told them "I don't get the band", and when she said she wasn't going anywhere without them he voted no to sending them to Vegas. So they proved to him that this wasn't about just Kehlani, it was about POPLYFE.

* Ian Johnson - Yo-Yo Performer
Talent? Yes. Entertaining? Not really. Especially since he made multiple mistakes. He did pull off some cool tricks, though. But even if he did manage to pull it all off seamlessly, it isn't a headlining act. Sorry...

* Landau Eugene Murphy, Jr. - Classical Singer
It's a mean thing to say, but he does look like the kind of guy who would wash cars for a living. But holy hell can this guy sing. I think he started off a little weak, but once he got into it he killed it! Going into this round, I wasn't a Landau fan. But he has won me over.

* Purrfect Angelz - Dance Troupe
It was like a cross between The Rhinestone Ropers, Steven Retchless, and Attack Dance Crew. I loved it! But that might just be because I have a penis. This could be a Vegas act. Though I think if they want to be headliners, they need more Angelz. After a couple songs, they'd be exhausted!

* Monet - Singer
I feel bad for her. She got almost no face time in the audition and Vegas rounds, so she went into the live show with a disadvantage. Then they play her intro video and she has such a tragic story. Is she a great singer? No. But I thought it was still pretty good. Unfortunately I don't think she got a fair shake at this, and that's too bad. But I agree with Piers, in a few more years with some work I think she could be a fabulous singer. Maybe not a mainstream artist, but I could she her as a Broadway headliner. She makes me think of Nina from In The Heights. I mean, expect she's black.

* Captain and Maybelle - Sideshow Performers/Danger Act
Um... I... Err... I'm not entirely sure what to say. I mean, it's entertaining, but I don't think it is a Vegas act. It's a sideshow. And a freak show at that. I will give them this, though. From the audition I though Maybelle was just an assistant. I wasn't expecting her to, umm, participate.

* Lys Agnes - Opera Singer
I'm generally not a fan of the opera singers in this competition. But wow! She's stunning, and can sing beautifully. And it was visually great as well. I liked the whole black and white bit, and the picture frame and rose and pedals. It was just great across the board!

* Professor Splash - High Diver
Ok, he got the opportunity to break a world record on national television, but it is time for him to go home. Sure, if he advances he can jump higher or add fire or do something to make it more extreme, but it's going to get tiresome quickly. And it isn't a Vegas act. I don't think anyone would pay to watch him belly flop 13 times.

So, I have to say on the night, the singers steal the show. I think the top three should and probably will be POPLYFE, Landau Eugene Murphy, Jr., and Lys Agnes. The judge's pick is a little harder to call. I'm going to guess that it is going to be between Summerwind Skippers & Captain and Maybelle, with the 4th spot in the semifinals going to the jump ropers. Though I wouldn't be disappointed if Mauricio Herrera, Purrfect Angelz, or Monet stole 4th or 5th in the viewer votes. Any one of those 5 and I'm happy. But if SH'Boss Boys, Seth Grabel, Ian Johnson, or Professor Splash advance I will be highly disappointed.
