NicoleF's Top 100 Songs of 2020 - #9-12

Feb 27, 2021 by NicoleF
#12 - Cool - Dua Lipa

This is Dua Lipa's ninth entry on my year-end rankings. This is her highest placing song so far! Will she be able to beat it later on this year?

Synth-pop perfection! It's just so beautiful! Like a lot of other songs I mentioned previously, it just makes me feel like I'm on a cloud, closing my eyes, and feeling the wind move through me. It has always takes me to a great place. The sound is just so great. The whole sound on the album is amazing, but this always sticks out to me as the best sound of the songs from an aesthetic point of view. Dua's vocals are infectious, the chorus is fun, and I'm still shocked to this day that this hasn't been a single yet and probably won't be. Such a fun song! Hoping it gets to be picked as a summer single release! The production is just so good especially in the chorus and it's underrated!

#11 - Plastic Hearts - Miley Cyrus

This is Miley Cyrus's eleventh entry on my year-end rankings. Her highest placement was last year with Mother's Daughter at #11, so she ties it with this entry. Will she be able to beat it this year?

I mean...come on...it's pop perfection mixed with rock perfection. I keep saying it, but it's so true that Miley has finally found the perfect place for her voice. This, once again, is a track you can connect back to her relationship, marriage, and divorce to Liam which makes it have a more personal feel to it, but it's not a ballad whatsoever so I get to rock out while still appreciating the lyrics. Honestly "I just wanna feel, I just wanna feel something, but I keep feeling nothing all night long" is a mood and a half. The electric guitar as the bridge is so amazing and I love it so much. I actually love the production choices for the song. The beginning choices are actually a bit odd, but work so well with the vibe of the song. My favorite part, though, is Miley's voice. Holy fuck she sounds amazing on this track, especially in that addicting chorus!

#10 - XS - Rina Sawayama

This is Rina Sawayama's seventh entry on my year-end rankings. This is her highest placing song so far! Will she be able to beat it later on this year?

Rina is so creative! Literally a creative genius. The way this song can go through so many different vibes yet work so well. The verses remind me of some Cheetah Girls in Barcelona vibes, the chorus reminds me of some of the mainstream pop of the 2010s, and the guitar....whole fuck the guitar....literally feels rock, leaning a lot on basically being metal.........but yet it all works!?!? How!??! Creative genius, like I said. The bridge actually gives almost a haunting feel to the song while also adding more angst and it works so well within the song. I actually adore, though, the final chorus. Every artist adds a little something special in the final chorus, but Rina goes all out. I love the vocal prowess she shoves on us. When she does the multiple "a little bit mooooore"....literally probably one of my favorite vocal moments from her ever. So good! I'm happy this song blew up a little bit, but it deserved to blow up soooo much more!

#9 - Hallucinate - Dua Lipa

This is Dua Lipa's tenth entry on my year-end rankings. This is her highest placing song so far! Will she be able to beat it later on this year?

I mean, I'm not gonna lie with y'all, this song hasn't aged the best. It's still easily, far and away, top 10 material. It's not like it aged that badly, but it was my #1 song of 2020 for awhile so it did fall from #1 to #9. But let's not focus on the negatives, but instead, the positives. The upbeat, throwback bop is so great to just dance and sing your life to in the shower, in the car, during the day, at night, etcetera! It has an amazing dance-pop vibe and the pre-chorus build is so perfect in execution that it just lets you go crazy in the chorus. I wanted this to be a single when the album was released so when I heard it would be, I was excited.....but of course.....Dua had to only release it as a single in the UK so I, living in the US, was robbed of this blowing up, which I know it would've cause Don't Start Now, Break My Heart, and Levitating are HUGEEEE here and I'm sure We're Good will follow in suit. The music video is a bit disappointing, but the cartoon acid trip-esque theme works with the song and it's COVID, so I get it. At the end of the day, this song is a fun bop that I love dancing to and getting my life served to me everytime it comes on. May not be #1 anymore on this ranking, but it still was #1 on my Spotify Wrap-Up purr!
