Since I had so much time in quarantine, I listened to way more projects than usual, 40 to be exact. Most are albums, but there's 2 or 3 EPs in there so I thought it'd be fun to rank them!
#19 - Treat Myself - Meghan Trainor
Highlights - Meghan is so underrated! I already touched on two of the highlights in my other series since they were released in 2020, so I'll only do snippets here. For Workin' On It, the song's message is beautiful with it being about working on self-confidence, something everyone struggles with, and the vocals are stunning throughout the song for Meghan and the features. My favorite part though is "tryna see what you see when you look at me" because it sounds soooooooooooo beautiful. Meghan snappedt on that vocal. For Ashes, this is one of Meghan's better, slower, deeper cuts and I just think she sounds so beautiful in it! Also the acoustic version is so pretty! The chorus is my favorite part. For Wave, I think it's a fun song with a nice feature and really cool, unique production that sets it above a lot of other songs. Although production shines especially in the chorus, I prefer the vocals here. They're very catchy! Lastly, No Excuses, the song that everyone probably knows the most from the album cause it actually got fairly good radio back in, like, 2018 when it was released. This song is one of those "it's so bad it's good" type of songs. Like it's admittedly cheesy and a bit trashy, like how people see Meghan Trainor music mostly, but it works....like most radio-friendly Meghan Trainor music.
Lowlights - I know it's in aqua tier and I still enjoy it a lot, but After You is a lowlight. If you followed my music ranking series in 2019, you'd know AFTER YOU (note the caps) was in my top 50 songs of the year. AFTER YOU was on Meghan's 2019 EP, The Love Train (an actual good EP!). It was my favorite off the EP and so beautiful. I guess I wasn't alone in that sentiment so Meghan put it on this album.........with an updated feature artist and, honestly, it fell from pink tier to aqua tier because I don't care for the feature artist whatsoever...so yeah...that sucks. Onto the bad songs, Babygirl....nice message, some pretty vocals, but very weird production choices, especially in the chorus, that make me dislike it. It had such potential to be super pretty...but then they tried to make a potential ballad into an EDM-esque hype chorus...and it doesn't work. Evil Twin, just lyrically, doesn't work for me. Nice production, but the lyrics are so bad and kinda cheesy honestly. I get the message and it's nice, but just too cheesy and not in a trashy and/or "so bad its good" way. Another Opinion is a track that I think I'm a little too harsh. Relistening, I still don't care for it, but dark red tier may be too harsh. Definitely red tier still, though.
I just don't like talk vocals most of the time, especially when they're the majority of the song. Also it's cheesy. Also the deep audiotune vocal doesn't fit the song whatsoever and is kinda outdated. Also some of the vocals when she leaves the talk vocals feel a bit strained. Oh wow...now that I typed all that, I feel justified with the dark red ranking.
