For this episode, you will be given two words; one word chosen by Andrew and one word chosen by Ryan. You will have to submit a music video to a song that you think best associates with those words.
The song titles do not have to have the words in the name. Whatever song you feel associates with those words and has a good music video, that's what we want you to submit. This episode is all about your interpretation, so a small explanation may help us to understand why you chose the music videos.
The terms beauty and fright themselves can easily be seen as their own thing, not exactly connecting in any way. But one thing that does connect the two is that in most, if not all parts of life there is both beauty and fright. Love especially is one part of life that can involve a lot of both of these things. Aka, what im basing my submissions on.
BEAUTY
I don't feel like I need to explain the beauty in love too much. Ups and down are always bound to occur when falling in love. But in the end of it all you can't help but enjoy the moments with that special one. I believe 'Still Into You' expresses this point and shows the beauty of love the best.
FRIGHT
Love can always have its up and downs. While part of the beauty of love is that you feel like you've met that one person who just completes you. But, even at the highest moments, the fright of things going horribly wrong can always be there. I feel like 'Somebody That I Used To Know' is a good example of showing the feelings of such fright becoming a reality.
This theme actually works perfectly for me! Today I will be submitting two of my top 10 all time favorite songs, as I feel both fit the words assigned to us.
Alright! So, despite what you'd expect from past submissions, Beauty was actually a whole lot easier to decide upon. I knew exactly what song I was submitting. Rainbow by Kacey Musgraves is a song that means a lot to me. To get the obvious out of the way first, it just plain sounds gorgeous. But where it really gets me are those lyrics, both on a direct level and a subtextual. I struggle with depression a lot of the time, and this has been my go-to song to help get me out of my worst ruts for years. And then there's the subtext, which... I'm sure I don't need to know what else a "rainbow" stands for in this day and age, or why someone finally being able to see the rainbow that's always been above their head after years of cloudiness would impact someone. (As for the video, I find it simple yet effective.)
Now, this all actually ties in nicely to my Terror submission. What people find scary is completely subjective, of course... and for me, there isn't much that's scarier than looking back at where I once was, even just a few years ago. The feeling of losing yourself, the feeling of spiraling out of control all over again, the feeling of not being able to stop yourself from being pushed over the edge, all perfectly encapsulated by my favorite band's magnum opus: Breaking The Habit.
beauty - cardigan by taylor swift
this song is about the beauty of several things. lyrically, it's about the beauty of young love and its power. regarding its symbolism, the piano in the video represents taylor's relationship with music and how she clings to it while drowning symbolizes the power that music has on her life.
fright - bury a friend by billie eilish
it's about how drug use has led to the death of so many young people these days, including billie's close friends. definitely frightening visually and lyrically
Aight so I’m stupid and didn’t realise somebody I used to know is already used. I even checked but in my defence it was on the episode I didn’t submit something.
