I think it would've been better if the tribes weren't male/female because the females were going to talk anyways since they're girls, so if they were split up it would've been more interesting, especially at merge to see how loyal the tribes would've stayed to each other. But they wanted to keep it simple so the audience would keep better track if it was male/female tribes since they live together, because apparently they forgot that buffs exist.
