That Grand Old Party

1 dolphinsoccer4, May 19, 2012

The US House of Representatives is scheduled to vote for the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2013 (NDAA) this week. The NDAA says basically what the Department of Defense and military is going to do with the money given to them. Late last week the House Armed Services Committee (HASC) discussed the bill and passed it onto the House with a vote of 56-5. On the surface the NDAA is not ridiculous, if you forget that our nation’s military expenditure makes up 41% of the world’s total military expense. (Last year the United States was number 1 in military spending with 711 billion US dollars. China was number 2 with only 143 billion US dollars.) When you look closer some abnormalities pop-up.
As we all know, last weeks news cycle was dominated by LGBT rights: Amendment 1 in North Carolina, Obama coming out for same-sex marriage, and the story posted by the Washington Post about Mitt Romney’s harassment of fellow students in his youth. It seems republicans in the HASC wanted to put the LGBT community back in their place. They attempted to do so with an amendment sponsored by Steve Palazzo (R) Mississippi. His Section 537 states “A military installation or other property owned or rented by, or otherwise under the jurisdiction or control of, the Department of Defense may not be used to officiate, solemnize, or perform a marriage or marriage-like ceremony involving anything other than the union of one man with one woman.” They cited the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) which says, ” No State, territory, or possession of the United States, or Indian tribe, shall be required to give effect to any public act, record, or judicial proceeding of any other State, territory, possession, or tribe respecting a relationship between persons of the same sex that is treated as a marriage under the laws of such other State, territory, possession, or tribe, or a right or claim arising from such relationship.” The Democrat’s responded by saying that DOMA gave the right to the states on whether or not to legalize gay marriage. So whether or not the state that the DoD property was on had legalized gay marriage determined if a same-sex marriage could be carried out on that property.
The GOP has always declared themselves the party for our military. Seeing as to how they so readily discriminate against a whole community of individuals that fight for our freedom, that does not sound true. Finally when Don’t Ask Don’t Tell was repealed gays and lesbians could serve openly in our great nation’s military. Republicans just could not let that go. I ask you Republicans; do you believe gays are so immoral that they should not have the right to die for you? Does knowing a serviceman is gay somehow make his death dishonorable? They put their lives on the line every day for this country and for you just like the straight guy. I am not too young and naive to understand this. Why the blind hate GOP?
