Welcome back my TOP EIGHT to (っ◔◡◔)っ ♥ Nate's Movie Taste ♥ EPISODE 3!
Last week we had a very shocking elimination with an early frontrunner going home in 9th place! Anything can happen here at NMT so everyone had better be giving 100% every week!
𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐄𝐍𝐆𝐄
It's pretty easy this week! You must send a movie that is BASED ON something. It can be a movie based on a novel, a comic book, a true story, etc. Really, it can be based on anything as long as you tell me what it's based on if it isn't obvious already.

New's Movie Taste - ROUND 9 (RESULTS)

4 NewNightmare7, Jan 11, 2022

Hello and welcome to the results show of round 9!
I adore all 5 of you and it kills me to eliminate one of you but if I didn't the game wouldn't end so someone has to go sadly. Here are the critiques:
turkeylover - Last Night in Soho (2021) - Oh look at you submitting something I actively praised :p. My mistake for doing so but I cant help but absolutely love this movie. I had just such an euphoric experience with this movie. The use of colour, mirror techniques and performances from everyone just are so stellar. Everything has unique flow and its no surprise because its Edgar Wright...his style is so appealing to me and im fully on board with every project he makes. Absolutely without a doubt my favourite movie of 2021 and im so pissed it did not get more recognition that it truly deserved. Fucking stupid as hell.
Symmetry888 - Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) - So I can see why it doesnt resonate with some people. While the adventure is great, it does feel a little inaccessible for children. Watching it through an adults perspective I found myself really invested in the discovery and journey Milo was taking. Matthew J. Fox is a great voice actor and his performance here is really good (although I tend to always hear Stuart Little). The animation really holds up as well. I would love to see this movie have more recognition cause it does deserve it.
tbrown_47 - Poseidon (2006) - Watching this, Netflix has this weird ass version where the aspect ratio is abnormally bigger on the bottom which was annoying but I wont review that negatively, because there are other negatives. I dont really feel invested in the characters. None of them stand out or feel important enough to the overall story. I do enjoy some of the performances though, particularily Richard Dreyfuss and Josh Lucas. I also find the CGI has not aged well, which doesnt help when the movie is like 80% CGI. That being said, I always enjoy a disaster movie and this movie does have entertaining moments. Not enough to stand but enough to enjoy the movie overall.
demgirl6 - Rise of the Guardians (2012) - I dont know if this movie has any marketable ability to me but I can't deny the visuals are spectacular. I enjoyed the voice cast alot and the tones/themes of the movies are alot of fun to experience. I dont know it has a charm to it.  I always like villains who are understanding and Jude Law is great. I think overall, this movie has alot going for it and thats great
PennyTrationStan - Mulholland Drive (2001) - My first David Lynch movie! Yay! Oh my god though is this movie hella confusing. Like its really weird...am I upset? Not really. I just found this to be intriguing. I love that Billy Ray Cyrus is just laying in a bed as his role. The sound on this movie is eerie. It captures alot of background noise and like puts it to the front which makes the scenes daunting. Again, not a bad thing. Its hard..

THJYMTC: Round 4 (Submission Phase)

7 SirNiceGuy, Oct 25, 2021

Welcome to the fourth round. Even as I find myself busy with other things, namely college, I still very occasionally find time to put this together. So thank you seven for sticking around and being patient. Let's not waste any time and get onto the theme. And speaking of wasting time...
~~THEME: DON'T WASTE MY TIME (<= 3:00 minutes)~~~
That's right, every song you submit has to be less than or equal three minutes in length. 3:00 is the absolute *maximum* length I will allow for this round. Genre, lyrics, even source material don't particularly matter, it just has to be short.
DUE TIME: BEFORE 12:00 AM EST, October 29th (Friday) (October 28th is that Thursday) (Just want that to be really clear)
Get to it, gang.

THJYMTC: Round 3 (Judgment & Elimination)

4 SirNiceGuy, Oct 12, 2021

Alright gang, take 4 of getting this thing published.
This is the first time that every contestant has properly submitted something. To that I say, "Thank you!" For this round, I had the eight contestants pick a song that charted on neither the Billboard Hot 100, Rolling Stones Top 100, or UK Official Singles Chart Top 100.
1. Jaxon: New Rush (Gin Wigmore): Cool, a song I've actually heard before. It's got a good edge and a good groove to it, and Gin Wigmore's a good singer. Only real complaint is that she sometimes slips into something resembling an Elle King voice on the hook.
2. tennisplayer963: Shameika (Fiona Apple): Inspirational little tune about a random act of kindness from someone Fiona barely knew. The production might put some people off, but it's Fiona Apple, of course it's solid singer-songwriter stuff.
3. coolKat - Ya'aburnee (Halsey): Album track from an album I haven't even heard yet. I should probably get to that. It's a good, if somewhat morbid love song about not wanting to outlive your loved ones.
4. Symmetry888 - The Valley of the Pagans (Gorillaz ft. Beck): I remember that one line about the viagra tablets in a warehouse. It's interesting to see two alternative icons of the 90s (Damon Albarn, the musician behind Gorillaz, was also behind Blur), and it certainly sounds like a weirdo 90s alternative cut.
5. camell22: Bad Kids (Lady Gaga): It's a Lady Gaga deep cut, alright. It's perfectly solid, I haven't yet heard a Lady Gaga song I thought was bad, I've just always been more of a The Fame Monster kinda guy.
6. FromAWindow - Good Kisser (Lake Street Dive): Sounds tailor-made for adult-contemporary radio. It's about on-par with the best of that sound, even if it's a sound I'm not crazy about in general. Still, it is competent from a technical standpoint.
We are now down to the Final 2. And now for an obligatory bit of suspense.
.
.
.
bigdizzleyomama... Demgirl6... Which of you will survive to the next round?
.
.
.
.
7.
.
.
.
.
Demgirl6: Out of Style (The Wrecks): The chorus sounds like an elephant, and I swear I've heard that voice on so many indie songs in the past (Nasal, almost punchable. Could be that Oliver Tree's ruined that tone forever for me). It does get better after the first chorus, leading me to give the slight edge to this one.
.
8. bigdizzleyomama - R.I.P. (Brooke Candy ft. Ashnikko): Not meant to be taken seriously. The hook is pretty lackluster (r i PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE) and it's technically unimpressive (fairly average flows and monotone deliveries), leading to it almost feeling apathetic. Don't dislike it, but it largely winds up losing by default.
Sorry, bigdizzleyomama, that means you are the third player eliminated from the competition. I'm sorry to eliminate you this early, but I hope you understand...

THJYMTC: Round 3 (Submission Phase)

11 SirNiceGuy, Sep 22, 2021

And then there were eight. Welcome to your next round. Now that we have the first two rounds out of the way, hopefully I can afford to get a little wacky with the themes. For now though, I'll keep it fairly simple:
~~ROUND 3 THEME: Uncharted Waters~~
What does that name mean? It's pretty simple: No songs that charted on the Hot 100 of either of the Billboard Hot 100, Rolling Stones Top 100 Songs, or UK Official Singles Chart will be allowed. I'm looking mainly for released singles that failed to chart here, though I will accept album deep cuts. If you aren't sure if a song charted, check Wikipedia (if the song doesn't have an entry, check the album's article or simply Google it) or ask me in PMs, I will gladly research it for you.
Submissions will be due 9:00 PM on Saturday, September 25th. Remember, if you need more time, PLEASE message me. With that said, get to it.

THJYMTC: Round 2 (Judgment & Elimination)

4 SirNiceGuy, Sep 21, 2021

Thank you everyone for submitting. All in all, this was a solid round filled with some fairly decent music. This was a difficult one to rank, a lot of the songs switched around repeatedly. In the end though, I'm pretty happy with how this turned out. With that being said, here's the rankings.
~~~~
1. tennisplayer963: Head Over Heels (ABBA): This tune is far darker in tone and more synth-heavy than their previous hits, and despite the internal politics, this song is one of the most sonically mature and interesting they ever made. Even as they fell apart, ABBA were able to put out more great music, and this is a testament to that.
2. coolKat: Good Morning Heartache (Diana Ross): A cover of a Billie Holiday staple recorded early in Diana Ross's solo career, this is the kind of single that proves that Diana Ross very much deserved to be such a dominant figure in popular music for decades. Compared to the original, this doesn't really add or change much to make it stand out, but the fundamentals are so solid it doesn't really matter.
3. Symmetry888: Hounds of Love (Kate Bush): Kate Bush is such a music nerd artist that it's a crime I haven't dug as far deep into her discography as I should yet. On the spectrum of 80s pop artists, this is definitely on the artsier end, unashamedly unique and grandiose. I'm not sure it's one I'll go back to compared to others on the album, but it's one I have a lot of respect for.
4. FromAWindow: Rosanna (Toto): The local classic hits station used to play this one constantly along with Toto's other big hits, like Hold the Line or Africa. This is that classic 80s soft rock cheese; yacht rock, I've heard people call it. It's corny and lame, but in an enjoyable way; it's not deep or intriguing, but it's silly fun, and sometimes that's all you really need.
5. bigdizzleyomama: Nasty (Janet Jackson): This is a song that exudes confidence. It's the song that would give us New Jack Swing, an extremely turn-of-the-decade genre that remains both dated and timeless to this day. It's not a song I go crazy about, it feels sparsely produced, but there's no doubting how important and genuinely good it is, both to Janet's career and music as a whole.
6. camell22: If I Could Turn Back Time (Cher): Released in the second half of 1989, this one barely counts, but it very clearly couldn't have come out in any other period of time. It's a perfectly acceptable power ballad, all things considered, built for arenas and concert venues, but as a result it feels a bit less impactful outside of that context, and I fully admit Cher's voice isn't my favorite, but it's good all things considered.
7. Demgirl6: The Human League (Don't You Want Me): If "If I Could Turn Back Time" is the most late-80s thing ever made, then this is the most early-80s thing ever made. Some say she's still working as a waitress in that cocktail bar to..
THJYMTC: Round 2 (Submission Phase)
10 SirNiceGuy, Sep 17, 2021
Welcome to Round 2, everyone. Hope everyone enjoyed last round and got to listen to the other songs. We're down to nine players, so let's see what everyone has in store for this round.
~~ROUND 2 THEME: OLD SHIT (1989 or earlier)~~
Yep, we're doing this: Old shit. Only post songs that come from the 80s or earlier. I'm mainly doing this now because I noticed that every single song posted last round is from the 2000s or later, and I thought it'd be fun to spice things up a bit.
Still gonna be overly critical though, that's just how I do things.
Submissions will close at 6PM EST on Monday, September 20th, or 10PM GMT. If you need more time, please message me, and have fun.
Notable Events:
- Honestly, this season was kind of boring IMO. I think I'm just not a fan of 99% of team challenges, because a lot of people were able to slide by this season way too easily.
- Team World kind of dominated the entire time, winning the first three, nobody really flipped to USA after a win, but a bunch of team USA flipped to world. I think 3/4 of the winners on team world started out on team USA which is pretty funny. They snatched the 3 OG team world places in the final w/ the puzzle purge.
- The winners were all iconic in their own way... #Sosyo finally won a season after like 5 finals appearances, #Brittany got her first win with a few elim wins thrown in there, #Bamold won on his rookie season and I believe was in the tribunal more times than anyone else, and #Kindred got her second win.
- The runner ups were pretty cute too, but #Buttercup was the cutest with like 3 elim wins, multiple daily wins, and turncoating 3 times I think? LOL.
- The four purged in the final would have been good winners, but none were too impressive to where it was like damn they really got robbed over their tribe mates.
- With the final so large in number of castmates (12!) it kind of makes people who did really well look like they didn't in the chart... I think that is another downside of the team challenge format... so look at your chart just bc you were not in the top 12 people, they all made finals and a lot of you slayed and were robbed right before.
- #Candy finally got her first elim win, and then served with a second one... just to get DQ'd, which was unfortunate.
- All in all, kinda boring.. I'm gonna try to stay away from team challenges for a bit, cutthroat is the superior team challenge format.
