Formerly known as the Aral Sea, the sea of a thousand islands, a powerful and imposing feature upon the face of Central Asia. Time has not been kind to the Aral Sea. Soviet drainage projects have decimated the basin, creating a desert with dangerous winds and a serious lack of resources.
