It’s a dark night, a reddened moon peeking out from beneath the clouds.
A young woman is walking into a graveyard. She seems to be in a trance-like state, unaware of where she is or where she’s going. She comes to a halt suddenly, staring with blank eyes up at a tall man, his features obscured by the trees hanging overhead and blocking out the moonlight.
“I’m here,” the woman says. “I… saw you in my dreams. What do you want with me?”
“Amanda,” the tall man says, “you already know what I want.”
“Yes…” Amanda sways into him, as if drunk. “It just seems all foggy. Like…” She struggles to go on.
“Let me make it clearer then,” he says, pulling her close and sinking his teeth into her neck.
Amanda cries out in pain, but there’s no one around to hear her.

Eli’s staring down at a newspaper. On it, there’s a missing ad for his sister, Amanda Novak, dated April 14th. There’s a photograph of her attached, with a brief explanation of her disappearance from a party Serena Kopala was holding that night.
“Why so serious, bro?” Vlad asks, clapping Eli on the shoulder as he walks into the classroom.
Eli puts the newspaper down, trying to laugh it off. “Nothing… just looking for news about Amanda.”
Vlad winces, having forgotten all about that. “She’s still missing?”
Polly perks up from the desk next to them. “Actually, my friend got sucked up by a UFO in April!”
Molly leans over, shaking her head. “She didn’t actually get sucked up by a UFO,” she tells Eli, sotto voice. “She did something worse. She moved to Canada.”
“Brrrr. So cold,” Polly says, rubbing her arms.
“Maybe Amanda’s in Canada, too!” Vlad says, wide-eyed. “Wouldn’t that be so cool?”
Eli looks between them, then back down to the newspaper, and sighs. “Yeah. Real cool.” He crumbles it up in a ball, throwing it into a trashcan.
Peyton, from her seat behind the siblings, is grimacing at this entire mess. “Not cool, ladies… not cool.”

Miranda’s sitting outside at a table with Paivel, Robin, and Ev after their summer class let out.
“Do you think Serena’s going to hold a party soon?” Miranda asks, opening her phone to take a selfie in the good lighting.
Robin raises an eyebrow at her. “Girl… after what happened to Eli’s sister? That’s not right to be saying,” she says, shaking her head as she gathers her things to leave.
Ev looks confused. “You didn’t know about Amanda going missing?”
“No.” Miranda watches her get up to walk off, turning back to Paivel and Ev. “How would I know that?” she asks, annoyed.
Ev shrinks down in his seat. “I just… thought Paivel would’ve told you… he knows a ton about it.”
Paivel lights up, ready to finally wow the first girl to talk to him since he started college. “I don’t know a lot,” he says, lying because he did a full story on it in the newspaper back in May, “but that Eli guy’s sister, her name’s Amanda by the way, left the party Serena had totally drunk and then completely disappeared. It’s even more mysterious because it was during the first blood moon in ages and apparently the Novak family said she was acting super weird in the time leading up to it. Sleepwalking, having weird dreams about men…”
“That’s natural, isn’t it?” Miranda asks, confused.
Ev nods rapidly. “Totally natural.” He gets twin stares for chipping in and wilts, going back to writing his essay.
Paivel sighs, adjusting the strap on his messenger back. “Not the types of dreams she was having,” he says. “She always woke up screaming, like she was in pain.”

Victoria’s sitting in the library with Lance, Gabe, and Isadora, planning out their group project for a class together.
Victoria taps her pen against the table. “We could cover vampire myths? And maybe link it to Gothic literature?”
Gabe raises an eyebrow at his partner. “Victoria, babe, isn’t that a little… insensitive, considering a vampire up and stole Eli’s sister?” he asks, lying through his teeth because he wants to redirect them to writing about Catcher in the Rye.
Lance looks up from the book he’s reading and smirks at Victoria. “I think it’s a great idea. And I’m currently working in a dissertation that lines up very perfectly with the topic, so we’d be at a head start.”
Isadora frowns at Gabe. “It’s not nice to make jokes about the missing women here…” She glances between them. “But it might be interesting to look into local legends instead…?”
Victoria and Lance both nod after hearing that as Gabe slumps down in his seat, groaning as he’s once again overruled.
