It didn’t take long for Emily to uncover her husband’s affair. For the most part he did very little to hide it. The long hours, the late night phone calls and the scent of perfume all were obvious indicators. Yet, with all the signs, Emily still wasn’t sure what to do. How could she accuse the man she loved, for over two decades, of cheating? The father of her two daughters could never do such a thing…or so she hoped.

Adam was a man who devoted his life to caring for his family. He worked to provide them with the luxuries he knew they deserved. However, he himself desired more. Cars, homes, women. Adam wanted more.

“Affairs happen all the time,” he would tell himself before launching into a passionate tryst.

One morning, after Adam left for work, Emily phoned her sister, Lindsey. It didn’t take Lindsey long to show up after hearing the sadness in her little sister’s voice.

“Oh no you’re not. I know when something is bothering you and clearly something is.”
       
“Lindsey, I promise there’s nothing wrong,” said Emily, trying to sound as convincing as possible.
       
“I swear you’ve always been like this. Why do you constantly insist on keeping your feelings to yourself?”

“Some people just like to keep their feelings to themselves.”

Annoyed, Lindsey went over to the pitcher of water sitting on the counter and poured herself a glass. After a few moments of silence Emily finally spoke.

“I feel empty.”

“Why’s that?” said Lindsey with a slight irritation.
       
“I-I think Adam is having an affair.”
       
“Why exactly do you think that?”
       
“Well he’s always working late and he get’s these late night calls. He always goes into the other room. It’s like he tries to hide something.”
       
After a moment, Lindsey busted out laughing, which took Emily by surprise.

“I’m sorry, Em, but is that really all you have on him?”
       
“Well…yeah. What’s so funny!?”
       
“Emily, sweetheart, Adam is a business man. He does business and takes business calls. He is not cheating on you, dear.”
       
“What makes you so sure?”
       
“What reason would he have? He has a beautiful and devoted wife, two great kids. He has the picture perfect life. Why would he want to destroy that for some meaningless sex?”
       
Emily always felt her marriage was strong. There had yet to be any reason for her to doubt that. Sure she and Adam had their fights, but to Emily, their lives were perfect. Perhaps that was the real problem for her.

“Listen, Ems, if you truly believe Adam is cheating on you then you need to confront him. Otherwise you will just drive yourself crazy with “what if’s.”
       
“In all honesty I…I don’t think he would. I love my husband and he is devoted to us as a family. I guess I just sometimes fear that he will one day decide that I’m not enough for him.”
       
Lindsey sat listening to her sister go on about her insecurities and how her fears of infidelity were suddenly creeping up on her. Once Emily had gotten it all out she revealed a subtle smile.

“You think I’m crazy don’t you?” said Emily.
       
“Not at all. Ok maybe just a bit, but look sweetie I’ve been married twice before. I know when a man cheats. I know how it feels to be the woman all alone at home while her husband is out. I understand the insecurities you have…but you can’t allow it to destroy you. Once that happens you eventually destroy your marriage. Do you trust Adam?”
       
“Yes, with all my heart.”
       
“Has he given you any reason not to trust him?”
       
“No.”
       
“Then there’s absolutely nothing to fear…but if he ever does turn your fears into reality, I’ll slit his throat.”

With that both women let out a laugh and ended the afternoon visit with a hug. Lindsey got in her car and waved goodbye to Emily, who stood on her porch smiling. Oh how she adored her sister. She had always been the one to calm her down. The person she could always rely on for support and guidance.

Later that evening, Lindsey drew herself a bath. Candles, bubbles and a glass of red wine all allowed her to decompress.
       
Her cell phone rang.
       
“I’m sort of tired of you toying with my emotions,” she said.



“Is that so? Well I’m sure there are other things you wouldn’t mind me toying with,” the man replied.

“Another late night at the office?”
       
“Yeah, but I was fixing to head your way. That is if you still want me there?”
       
“As long as my sister never finds out, you’re always welcome here,” Lindsey said with a grin.

The line went dead and Lindsey placed the phone down, got out of the tub, and worked her way towards her bedroom. The same bedroom she was about to share, if only for an hour, with her sister’s husband…again.
