Challenge #8

"Breaking Norms"

After a controversial, yet interesting/inspirational photoshoot, our guest judge brought back a cool challenge this week. Your guest judge this week is the 1st runner-up of the Next Top Model, Cycle 14: Art of Redemption, who was brought back last minute as a wildcard for the Next Top Model, Cycle 15: All-Stars and eventually winning it. It's Guest Judge Jhonattan Burjack (Russell11)!

Your challenge this week is a challenge who's idea originated from also one of our judge, Judge Garrett which was featured on the 4th week of NTM14. Your challenge this week is entitled "Breaking Norms" and that's exactly what we are going to do, we are going to break some boundaries.

Do not hold back on this challenge, that's the main goal. Break the stereotypes that this particular individual can only do what the society perceives him/her to do. Break the norms, something you are unusual of. It doesn't matter if it's your personal norms, society or gender norms, it just got to be broken in this challenge.

You have 24 hours to do this challenge. Goodluck! x

Here are some examples I found interesting from Cycle 14:

1.) Jon Kortajarena
"I normally don't go nude, but I decided to break that norm for you all today. A lot of people look at me as this sex icon or something, but I see flaws in the mirror just like everyone else. My biggest insecurity is in my scrawny legs, which is why I rarely do a full nude shoot or show off my legs to this day despite how far in my career I am. Here is me, at my most vulnerable - nude. Scrawny legs and all!"

2.) Lizzo Jefferson
The norm I will be breaking today is the one where big girls are told to be self conscious of their bodies and to stay covered up because its "unappealing". I suffered a lot with this when I was younger, but I was able to finally destroy that norm and become my true self. "That's just the society we're all unfortunately born in — the one where you have to hit your worst and hate yourself in order to love yourself. Those laws only exist because self-hate is so prevalent. Body positivity only exists because body negativity is the norm." (Quoted directly from an interview).

3.) Luka Sabbat
"Usually I don't focus on much of the make-up or the sex appeal or stuff like that, I'm not the type of model to really take my shirt off, and in the pictures you've seen of me I tend to be more relaxed. I think in this photo I make things a little bit more serious, I think with the make-up, and my exposed chest, and even my facial expression I'm trying to show that I can be more than just this cool edgy person that you see a lot from me."
https://i.imgur.com/wBdGX6o.jpg

4.) Miles McMillan
"A social norm I break everyday and everytime I model really is gender boundaries. I tend to model affeminity more and more and while I do get backlash from people who aren’t with the 21st century yet i still continue to do it and make it more normal."

One of the biggest social norms (at least in America) is breast feeding... or really breast feeding in public, most people are disgusted by a woman feeding their baby in public, and some even get arrested even if a woman dare show her breasts to take care of child.

Sometimes babies need to eat and so I'm going to be open to breaking the social norm of openess about natural human things, and that it's okay for woman to breast feed, it shouldn't be looked down upon, it's a valid way to feed a child, and sometimes they need to eat at the most inconsequential time

This is a very important challenge to me as I'm known to be on the skinnier side and nowadays being very skinny is attributed to being unhealthy or unnatural.
One comment I won't forget was when at one point on my photos was deemed scary because of my figure. I want to break the norm that girls in the lower end are not all unhealthy, here I am showing off my figure and rocking it even when people might say what is she popping out! With my unbothered face and attitude to all the comments I would receive and being confident with my body!

"Breaking Norms"

In the U.S. The LGBTQUIA+ Community has had to fight for a very long time to get the same rights as others and they have had them for quite sometime now, But sadly there are still people out there who see us as offensive or "not the norm" But it is harder in other countries where you can either be arrested or killed on the spot for being openly gay/lesbian/trans etc.. or even expressing yourself through the opposite genders clothing. Which is the norm I am breaking today. I love to wear both Female & Male clothing!!!!
Now I am from the Ukraine & In 1999 The Ukraine President believed that homosexuality is caused by a mental illness or the corrupting influence of foreign films.
In the Ukraine Conversion therapy is still used to this day on Minors. And Transsexuality is considered a Mental Illness. I am very passionate about this!!! <33

Fernanda Ly- Unnatural Features

In the modeling world, most of the time people who do have unnatural features like dyed hair, colored contacts- and even skin conditions or other things they might not be able to control get criticized for their beauty. The people who dye their hair or wear colored contacts often are ridiculed for not being beautiful enough so they have to make themselves beautiful. Where as people with skin conditions are criticized for not being normal enough to be beautiful. The modeling world typically is very ‘one tracked’ where they look for mostly the same thing. But it’s these differences in people which help them stand out and embrace themselves.

My dyed hair has helped me immensely to stand out. I’m able to  be more out there and crazy whilst still having the ability to become serious and focused. I’ve showcased funky and weird and cute and serious all in this competition. and I want to embrace my seriousness in this photo as this is a very serious topic, where people who are different either by choice or by genetics are treated poorly- and it’s just not fair or right not in the slightest

Jacob Morton - Breaking Norms

I’m gonna keep it short and sweet because we all know that the modeling world is not easy to BOTH genders. We know how agencies and brands DO NOT want a woman under 5’10 at best to model for them. They for sure do not tend to cater to looks that would make a women “normal” looking. Body fat, hair dye, etc no thats bad. But say a women is SKINNY they can work with that. Say they have a skin condition or maybe a gap tooth perhaps...they can work with that.

For guys its way harder. For me its hard. I do my best to make it in this business but as this competition has already showed even at my best it doesn't necessarily impress those that are judging me. I have a feeling why. Guy models have to be BEAUTIFUL majority of the times. Thats a norm that has been embedded in this community we so love. Chest has to be chiseled and abs POPPING!!!!! Everything has to be sexy because you have to be eye capturing and endearing.

When you look at me you will not put sexy next to me. I’m usually labeled the puppy dog, the cute little boy next door with MORE emphasis on boy. Yes I’m scrawny but im still a model and if you don’t like what i have to present then i’ll find someone that does.

“Black Women Are Aggressive”

https://66.media.tumblr.com/3a7b1ec974f1702c4c689db2bee7cdb1/tumblr_oyct8i9IvT1qzu432o1_500.jpg

So many black women get told they are aggressive on a daily basis! If a black woman is to stand up for what they believe in or decide to get their point across they get deemed as “aggressive”. I think it’s absurd and I don’t get why black woman are stereotyped in that way. If a white and black woman were to get into an argument or disagreement I can guarantee you that at least somebody out there will automatically go to “oh that Black woman is aggressive”.

Today I am showing you that no, not all black woman are aggressive! Black woman are POWERFUL not AGGRESSIVE. I’m showing you that black woman carry strength but are actually extremely kind and playful. I’m smiling while giving you power. But guess what? I can assure you someone will say that my photo tonight is aggressive. Thank you.

For this week’s challenge, I wanted to break the stereotype of men being expected to dress more masculine and manly. In the photo, I’m wearing sequin pants which is definitely something a woman is expected to wear rather than a man. Even the shirt I’m wearing is a little feminine.

Jhonattan Burjack//

Jacob Morton-I loved the explanation of your photo, especially since this is something that is often overlooked in the modeling industry so  I’m proud of you for bringing light to this situation. However, this photo is not my favorite. I’m glad that you are showing your body with no shame, I just wish you went a little bit further with it.

Fernanda Ly-I like that the serious tone of your explanation matches perfectly with your photo. However, the photo itself isn’t all that. You’re kinda stiff in the photo and dead in the eyes. There just isn’t any passion there like there was in your explanation.

Ming Xi-I like this photo. You are definitely flaunting your curves, or lack thereof, and doing so unapologetically and your explanation resonates with the photo perfectly.

Jason Anthony-I liked where you were going with your explanation, but I’m not going to lie, this photo is not my favorite. Your clothes aren’t the most masculine, but I wouldn’t say they’re all too feminine either, plus I can’t really see your face either. I feel like this photo would’ve been 10x better if you just turned around.

Caroline Trentini-I completely agree that breastfeeding is a perfectly normal thing and shouldn’t be looked down upon whatsoever, and I feel like you showed exactly that in your photo. I love the baby, I love the setting and your expression makes it look like you’re tired of everyone and I love it!

Ajak Deng-I absolutely love that you’re standing up for black women right now and I completely agree that their power is often mistaken as “aggression”. However, I don’t really get power when I look at this photo. I see happiness, I see excitement, but not so much power, however this is not a bad photo nonetheless.

Naty Chabanenko-Homophobia and transphobia are still very prevalent in this country today, so I’m glad that you are passionate on fighting against that. I really like this photo, I think the mustache is a nice touch and it’s definitely giving pure badassery.
