Challenge #4

"Breaking Norms"

So, hello Top 10! For Efren, congratulations on having the first saved of the competition, then again comes the catch - you need to perform atleast top half of the models currently here for this coming week (which means atleast Top 5) or you'll be in danger again of elimination as the twist stated - "HOWEVER it is in the saved model hands on how he/she will be getting redemption as it is needed for him/her to place at least higher than half of the model in the game for the next week. If he/she failed to placed higher, the model will be eliminated (if he/she will not be saved again)."

Now your challenge this week is going to be judged by Judge Garrett, and it goes a little bit interesting. He wants you to break your norms, something you are usual of. He specifically stated that he wants to know what norm you've broken and how that norm shaped you into the model you are today. If you can't think or connect a normally specifically to your model, at least do something like breaking a social norm.

An explanation is needed of course to further understand the photo. 24 hours to do the challenge, thank you and good luck! x

The norm I will be breaking today is the one where big girls are told to be self conscious of their bodies and to stay covered up because its "unappealing". I suffered a lot with this when I was younger, but I was able to finally destroy that norm and become my true self.

"That's just the society we're all unfortunately born in — the one where you have to hit your worst and hate yourself in order to love yourself. Those laws only exist because self-hate is so prevalent. Body positivity only exists because body negativity is the norm." (Quoted directly from an interview).

Usually I don't focus on much of the make-up or the sex appeal or stuff like that, I'm not the type of model to really take my shirt off, and in the pictures you've seen of me I tend to be more relaxed. I think in this photo I make things a little bit more serious, I think with the make-up, and my exposed chest, and even my facial expression I'm trying to show that I can be more than just this cool edgy person that you see a lot from me.

I've had enough of the standards of other people, I just want to break out in my shell and to be proud of who I am.

I'm always wearing colourful outfits and sometimes a bit of dark isn't bad. I also took this picture after an interviewer asked me if I would bleach my skin for 10.000 dollars, as many Sudanese women like me have done, just to look "better". So this is my response: dark is also beautiful and I'm showing it here.

A social norm I break everyday and everytime I model really is gender boundaries. I tend to model affeminity more and more and while I do get backlash from people who aren’t with the 21st century yet i still continue to do it and make it more normal

I decided to break a rather silly rule where it says "No pets for pictures", and that rule I don't know why it exists. Some say it's because it's really not used much or because others think it ruins the model, not knowing that the pet can also be one. The little dog I'm holding in this picture is called Opie.

I took quite a different approach to the “norm breaking” that is the theme of this week’s challenge. I’ve incorporated my body into most of my photos so I’m kind of straying away from that and going full-on face with this one. Another norm that I’ve never broken is mixing effeminate features with masculine features. This mixture is rarely seen in the modeling industry and if anyone’s going to break that norm and pull it off, I want it to be me. I’m taking a big risk with this one so hopefully it pays off.

I normally don't go nude, but I decided to break that norm for you all today. A lot of people look at me as this sex icon or something, but I see flaws in the mirror just like everyone else. My biggest insecurity is in my scrawny legs, which is why I rarely do a full nude shoot or show off my legs to this day despite how far in my career I am. Here is me, at my most vulnerable - nude. Scrawny legs and all!

If you think about suits you instantly think of men’s clothing and men’s formal wear so I wanted to show that yes I can wear gowns and be feminine and beautiful but I can still be beautiful wearing a suit with my arms cross giving off a more masculine side to me!

For this challenge, you were given the task of breaking a social or model norm that has shaped you into the model you are today. I will say these photos for most of you were a massive improvement and I feel us judges have lit a fire under you guys.

Bella Hadid (Rubes): I like that you chose to go with the norm of masculinity and femininity. I like your serious facial expression as well as the styling in this photo.

Coco Rocha (Tinkerbelll): I like where I thought you were going initially with a video of some sort but it’s more so a beauty shot as your face is the main focus of this photo. I think you had a great description but it didn’t resonate in your photo this week.

Efren Perdomo (nahuelaqua300): I think the “Rule” or norm of No Pets in photo mainly has to do with the animal would be the main focus of the photo and take away from the model who’s supposed to be the focus. Efren for this photo I think it worked very well, I really like the fact that you thought outside of the box and this was a major step up from last week.

Jhonattan Burjack (Russell11): I really liked your use of colors in this photo and I can see the mix of feminine and masculine characteristics but I wish you would have taken it a step further this isn’t a bad photo at all I just wish you went a little further with it.

Jon Kortajarena (tast519): I really like that you chose to break both a social norm and also an insecurity that you have been faced with as a model. I think this is one of if not your best photo to date.

Laith Ashley (chris2pei): I can see what you're saying as far as breaking out of your shell but I just wished your explanation would have supported your photo a little more so I’m not guessing. This is a great photo but it is always crucial to have a clear explanation to go with your photo.

Lizzo Jefferson (nateclove): I think your norm is very important and is something that models face each day. Some models have starved themselves because of the normality that models are meant to be a certain size. I really like this photo a lot your pose is great and the overall styling in this photo works perfectly with your photo. I think this is your best photo to date.

Luka Sabbat (spinfur): I agree 1000% that as a male model it is not all about sex appeal and having tons of shirtless shots to be successful in this industry. I like that you went a different route and chose to use makeup. I think your facial expression was great and overall this was a great photo.

Miles McMillan (coolKat): Gender Boundaries are major in the modeling world as it is said that as a male or as a female there are certain lines that you should and shouldn’t cross. I like the fact that you have and are embracing that and in this photo, I can see where you were going with this one so good job!

Nyakim Gatwech (varlto): I believe it’s very important to embrace the skin that you’re in as that’s one thing that we can not ever change no matter how much money we pay or are paid to cover it up. I think this is a very nice photo, I do however think it’s a little dark outfit wise so I do think just a little color would have made this photo a little better but overall this isn’t a bad photo.
