In my comments I’ve mentioned how many points I gave the song in its original contest.
1. Chloe x Halle (12 points in 405) - A silky smooth expensive R&B track that would’ve been a very worthy winner to TSC 405.
2. Push baby (0 points in 410) - This is a good, quirky song with interesting lyrical themes about young adulthood. It’s perhaps too similar to PANIC! and twenty one pilots, but I enjoyed it nevertheless.
3. Victoria Justice (0 points in 422) - This probably should have been a hit back in 2013. It’s a catchy bubblegum pop song by a good vocalist, even though it’s juvenile.
4. Manal (0 points in 415) - This is fine, but besides the repetition of 'blach' and cool production, there is little to hold on to.
5. Olivia Dean (12 points in 410) - An excellently crafted retro pop track with soul and mature lyricism. This is simply gorgeous.
6. ORI (6 points in 422) - Good debut indie-pop song with a catchy chorus. The vocals and production are both good, but they don't blend together perfectly at times.
7. DOLLA (0 points in 420) - There is definitely self-confidence here, but the loud production can become overbearing.
8. Jumpa, VVAVES (6 points in 402) - This track has a very similar structure to 'Wasabi’. This is catchy, but can get a bit repetitive and I’m not sold on the lyrics.
9. Bree Runway (0 points in 405) - Not sure why I’ve been sleeping on Bree all year, but this is even stronger than her SF1 track. A very fun 90s influenced hip-hop song, with a smooth pop outro also.
10. Karmen x BRUJA (0 points in 422) - My opinion on this one changes quite a lot. With a unique bounce drop, this song is an acquired taste, but it has similar cool aspects to those in ‘Raising Hell’ and I’m really feeling this today.
11. Why Don’t We (Unofficial, 0 points in 417) - I’m a huge Kanye West fan and Black Skinhead is one of my favourites by him so its difficult for me to hear this sample in a pop-rock track that lacks the same impact as the original.
12. Aly & AJ (0 points in 403) - Sounding like it legitimately could have been a classic in the 80s, this song has grown on me since its original contest.
13. Aluna (3 points in 410) - This is a catchy dance-pop song, even though it’s quite simple.
14. Mondo Grosso (0 points in 421) - I’m glad this was resubmitted because I wanted to give this track another chance anyway. After a few re-listens, this is a good ambient dance track with a transcendent quality.
15. Victoria Monet - Despite not being my highest placing song, this was one of my favourite tracks of 2020 and I believe it deserves its place in the finale. This is stunningly crafted disco that I do believe could become a sleeper hit at some point.
16. beabadoobee (5 points in 418) - I like the dream-pop meets grunge feel this has, it feels like a 90s throwback.
17. The Chainsmokers (12 points in 415) - A great funk-influenced dance track with a killer bassline that never loses energy. One of my most played tracks of 2020, and easily the slickest production The Chainsmokers have offered to date.
18. Millie B (0 points in 410) - This really is hilarious and lowkey has surprisingly good bars despite the cheap execution.
19. Tayla Parx (0 points in 415) - This song has lush retro production and Tayla is clearly a good vocalist but there is a disconnect for me which I probably put down to lacking originality.
20. LEON (7 points in 405) - In my opinion, one of the best winners of TSC 2020. This song sounds like the depressing sister of Symphony. This gorgeous track is rooted in so much real and intense emotion.
21. KAYTRANADA (Unofficial, 12 points in 417) - It’s unfortunate that the only reason this lost TSC 417 was because I accidentally took a nap that day before submitting my official scores. This is a good track, with strong funk and disco influences in the production and Tinashe sounding as slick as ever.
22. Neoni (0 points in 402) - Sounding like it was designed for a Netflix original, this is too melodramatic and forced for me.
23. CupcakKe (2 points in 422) - This deserved better in TSC 422. It has good bars and its packed with attitude.
24. Thelma Plum (6 points in 418) - I’m still so glad Lachie won with this track because its very authentic to his retro indie music taste, but it was also accessible enough to appeal to the wider TSC group. I really do think this is excellent and it has grown on me even more since it won. Great lyrics and clear Fleetwood Mac style of influence which I love. Definitely rooting for this one.
25. Evangelia (0 points in 419) - This song has seductive vocals and ethnic instrumentation and I should’ve given it more credit in TSC 419. Perhaps its perhaps too minimalistic overall, but its good.
26. Vanessa Quai (0 points in 402) - This coming back basically every TSC is hilarious. As for the track itself, it’s still a nice sentiment but the track feels never ending.
27. Rina Sawayama (12 points in 402) - Such an excellent fusion of genres and styles. XS is a wild journey while also remaining accessible and catchy.
28. Dagny (1 point in 402) - The biggest crime this song commits is that it lacks originality when comparing with her past songs, but its still a pleasant synth-pop song nevertheless.
29. HUGEL (0 points in 409) - The female voice in this track is as excruciating as the one in ‘
#SELFIE’.
30. Alanis Morisette (0 points in 406) - Powerful pop track about alcoholism which is delivered greatly by Alanis vocally. It’s instrumentation is good and punchy, although not hugely distinctive.
31. Red Hearse (12 points in 421) - This was such a great winner and was very deserving. Yet another excellently produced track by Antonoff. Silky smooth indie-pop track.
32. BANKS (8 points in 405) - One of BANKS’ stronger tracks to date for me. This is both experimental and emotional, with dark lyrics and greatly crafted sound effects.
33. Chescar (4 points in 414) - Despite being quite trashy, this is an enjoyable pop track with attitude. Good closer.
