multiply the left side by (x-1) in the numerator and denominator to get a common denominator of (x-1)^2 for both sides. This allows you to add/subtract like terms in the numerator

So the left side would be (x-1) multiplied against (2x+2) which would be
(x-1)(2x+2) = 2x^2 - 2x + 2x - 2 = 2x^2 - 2

so then you have (2x^2 - 2) - (x^2 + 2x + 8) = x^2 - 2x - 10 in the numerator
and then you have your common denom of (x-1)^2

i think u have to multiply the left term by (x-1)/(x-1) then foil and subtract

pretty much that whole “rewrite/simplify” step did not simplify it at all and its easier to multiply it out and add/subtract like terms from there
