We have finally reached the end (and yes joey65409 I realize it has been a long time). It is time to crown a winner, and Becksta20 and I are pleased to share the final results. Here are the final comments.
Africa - Toto
T: Obviously a classic. Really nothing bad I can say about this song.
B: Classic 80’s song tbh! I really didn’t like this song when I heard it years ago but it grew on me with time and is one of those songs you can’t not sing along to!
Stronger - Kelly Clarkson
T: I love Kelly, but this isn’t one of my favorites from her. There isn’t anything about the song I don’t like, but it just feels a bit generic.
B: This is a banger! Kelly has such a strong voice and the message in this song is what I’m here for! Great choice!
Beautiful - Christina Aguilera
T: This is one of those songs that delivers musically and lyrically. Such an encouraging song. The piano and backing track is such a great compliment to her voice.
B: Another strong female artist with a wonderful message! Love it!
Holding Out for a Hero - Bonnie Tyler
T: This song always reminds me of Shrek 2 - excellent movie btw. One thing I love about it is that there is a lot happening musically, and I couldn’t imagine anyone getting bored listening to it. I think it’s a little busy at times, but still a good song.
B: I love Bonnie! This is a song you can belt out and is one of my faves from her!
Love Wins - Carrie Underwood
T: I actually did enjoy this song. My biggest gripe against most country songs is the twang most artists seem to have, while Carrie has a bit of it, it’s not distracting. I think she really delivered here.
B: Carrie is a huge talent but there were some really strong songs submitted for the finale!
Change - Carrie Underwood
T: Carrie is obviously super talented, but I think a few things brought this down. It felt like towards the end she was fighting against the backing vocals. Not a bad choice, but there were others songs this round that worked a bit better for me this round.
B: I like this song but it just falls short of what I was looking for in the finale!
Footloose - Kenny Loggins
T: Great choice. Kenny Loggins has a slew of great 80s movie tracks. The guitar lick in this song is so good, and it’s just such a fun song overall.
B: I grew up dancing to this song, it’s a good one but not my fave from the submissions from the 80’s!
Bird Set Free - Sia
T: I’m not the biggest fan of Sia and her voice. I think the message and lyrics behind the song really make the song shine more than it would’ve otherwise.
B: I usually like Sia but her voice in this does not do it for me. I think the lyrics are good but I just can’t enjoy her sound here.
The Chain - Fleetwood Mac
T: This is honestly one of my all time favorite songs. Lindsay’s raw vocals, Stevie and Christine’s harmonies, and the iconic breakdown and bass riff in the middle - it really is such a well made song on all fronts.
B: I do love this song and you would have won this round up against the other songs in the free choice category!
