Australian Survivor has ~officially~

Sep 17, 2017 by splozojames50
imagelost the SPARK that made last season MAGIC. This season is essentially a dragged out season of modern US-Vivor with the editing focusing solely on hyper-strategy, big mewvz, and blindsiding the audience at every opportunity possible even when the castaways aren't.

Just compare last season's merge to this one. Connor/Kate had DEVELOPED and COMPELLING storylines. Meanwhile Jarrod was an absolute nonentity and the vote literally came down to ALL the heavily developed people vs the randoms that we know little to nothing about.

The alliance that includes: Ziggy (invisible up to like episode 6-7), Peter (only started getting substantial screentime one episode prior to merge), Jarrod (0 storyline), Annaliese (only shows up when absolutely necessary), and Tessa (set up to be perpetual underdog) votes against the alliance with ALL the heavily crafted edits (sarah, luke, henry, somewhat jericho) gee wiz i WONDER WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN.

Like in the middle of the episode it hit me thinking about the whole edgic concept of the winner coming from the "complex tribe" how fucking unbalanced the storytelling is and when you compare the care put into the STORYLINES of the merge boots last season and compare it to jarrad its so laughable yet sad tbh

modern survivor editing is a blessing and a curse. they do some funny jokes sometimes, but most of the time it's just "big mewvz" taking precedence over character development and complexity.

Sad!

dj4460 i mean at this point editing a season to focus mainly on strategy is to be expected but at LEAST do it right. like every other confessional (if it doesnt sound scripted) is spliced together harder than the charla and mirna level 5 "footrace". The audience is blindsided so often just to emphasis "blindsides!1!" (ziggy's facade comes to mind) and i am SO OVER the inception movie trailer music that plays before every commercial break accompanied by cheesy cliffhanger buzzword confessionals.

like just put together a compelling story jesus christ the storytelling this season just comes across as a heavily manipulated mess

pinkdyl i am enjoying the season id say its quite a solid season but that doesnt mean i cant criticize it

splozojames50 Sometimes Survivor does great storytelling WITHOUT blindsides. For example, when Erik went home at the F5 in Micronesia, they literally showed every voting confessional and it was the most iconic moment of the entire season and one of the most iconic moments in RTV history.

Blindsides aren't inherently entertaining, and I think CBS needs to learn that and focus on GOOD storytelling instead of "WOW THAT WAS SHOCKING!" storytelling.

Even if a horror movie scares you with jumpscares, that doesn't make it a _good_ movie.

Unless there's spencer bledsoe and zeke smith levels of game bots it will never reach US survivor level

dj4460 yea i agree, it really screws up the storytelling aspect when the you can tell the editors are focused on a blindside quota that a lot of character development takes a backseat which i think is this season's main issue from pushing it from "good" to "amazing"

ak
henry
sarah (to an extent)
jarrad (if he got more screentime)

I think your not appreciating the fact that the contestants are honestly bringing it this season and there is a lot of game play and strategy involved. the first season they still did have that sense of evry first season of everything and have a friendlier vibe hence the editors being able to focus on character development rather than thick strategy ~ which is quite interesting and quite unpredictable to any survivor us ive seen (1-30)

pinkdyl oh trust me i like the season and certain characters (michelle) are approaching top tier status for me.

if anything i think that it is YOU that is overestimating the strategy that is being played this season. its not that there is a difference in strategy from this season and last season, but that it is being portrayed differently. That is what this blog is about, this season is editing each episode on a per-episode strategy basis with a very obvious blindside quota whereas last season focused more on the characters and their experience while playing the game.

just because theres more idols in play at merge this season does not mean that theres any more "game play" or "strategy" involved than last season. at this point comparing this season to last season there were just as many "unpredictable" strategy/twist related moments last season than there have been this season (and id argue they had a larger impact last season too)

I think this critique is right on the nose. I've been VORACIOUSLY watching this season either way -- it would be hard not to after last season literally reinvigorated my interest in Survivor period -- but this season, despite still having better casting (imo) than US vivor of recent, has suffered editing-wise. I wanna see the cockiness in the dumb Tessa/Jarrad/etc alliance that made Tessa feel complacent enough to GO for that first reward challenge. But no, with A.K. gone there's nobody the editors care enough about from Summer Towel.

Still planning on seeing the season through but if the winner is Big Movez Sarah or Bigger Movez Henry IDK if I'll be coming back for the next one. TALK ABOUT a winner being shoved down your throat.

On a sidenote, I still would be relatively satisfied with a win from Luke, Michelle, or Tara, but I see them all as being rather unlikely now

Ak is disgusting and I hate him, and I dislike Henry too but those 3 are all way more interesting than the irritation that is US Survivor gamebots
AK fucked off pre-merge, Sarah has personality honestly (she reminds me of Phoebe in terms of her talking about strategy a lot but still having personality), and I feel like Henry will (hopefully) get out soon from a blindside
And as long as they're not Spencer/Zeke levels which I don't think they are or trying to be .gif's like Kelley then I can live with the edit

bbtdfanatic77 i agree with that, if anything they are lite-versions of those types of people which goes back into the whole ausvivor using a lot of modern us-vivor editing techniques instead of the elements that made last season a standout for me (and in the process producing a season that is more run of the mill)

mahogany yea thats what makes it so much more frustrating because the potential is THERE but they have dumbed everything down so much that you are just left wanting so much more.

sarah unfortunately seems to be a front runner though edit-wise ;_; Hopefully all the contradicting yapping of her going "im a model, im underrated!" "nobody knows im playing the middle" followed by literally everyone on the tribe going "shes a very strong player" "she wants it both ways" recently leads to her getting brooke'd as her perfect edit facade is CRUSHED
