So I have gotten a couple of questions about this new strain of COVID and here is what I know so far
Basically this is the strain a lot of health care professionals and scientists are the most concerned about. Why? Because it seems to be the most resistant and aggressive of the COVID-19 variants. Meaning the likelihood of people getting COVID is very high with this strain (even if you may have had COVID-19 before). But researchers are performing more tests in order to get more information. Some physicians in South African have stated patients seem to be experiencing more aches, pains, fever, sweating, itchy throat, and not really any issues with their taste or smell sensations
At this point, I highly encourage people to get vaccinated if they haven’t already, and if they are able to do so (without there being any kind of health complications). If you have gotten vaccinated, then great! But I would then stress to you and others about getting the booster shot. Resume wearing face masks (I know they are annoying, but they will help deter the virus). Be mindful of social distancing. Oh, and please wash your hands and disinfect surfaces that get touched often (yep, same rules apply just like with the other variants)! And brace yourself because it appears that traveling will be restricted or limited because of this aggressive variant
If you have any questions, then feel free to ask. Now is not the time to attack anyone or be dismissive. Just try to be supportive guys because we all have to live with and deal with this COVID-19 pandemic. Stay safe everyone <3 and thank you for attending my TED talk LOL
So that is a great question FighterMan. I believe this is what the World Health Organization (WHO) and the CDC are trying to figure out rn. My guess would be that it is since the healthcare providers that I know personally seem to be more bothered about Omicron
In short, assume the worst tbh, but be prepared for the worst
Great question, so I am a medical student (idk much, I am still trying to learn A LOT lol), but since I started school during the pandemic, me along with my cohort have kind of been forced to pay close attention to the pandemic because it affects us and upperclassmen (especially the ones who are/have started attending clerkships at hospitals). Plus the practicing faculty and administration are always sending us emails about the current state of COVID (because it affects the current and future medical community directly)
Also, I have a close friend of mine who works at the CDC Holder
And I think some cases were reported as being mild, but researchers are trying to do more testing in order to learn more about Omicron. But for now, some nations are really trying to contain any reported cases Chic
Queen of getting a top blog through informing everyone on here about something serious and not through calling someone out for petty game drama - this is why you’re my friend x
skyler1822 - do you have any idea why this strain has mutated so much whilst the others are like 1 or 2 mutations only? I read that this strain is 10 mutations.
catch_a_falling_star Just drove home from work listening to NPR where some guy who was on the S. African team which discovered the Omicron variant subscribes to the hypothesis that this variant might have been living and evolving inside one untreated immunocompromised person. They are puzzled that this variant is most closely related to a known variant from last year, but they haven't seen any of the middle pieces (they would expect to see an evolution where variants would be seen with some of the mutations already). The idea that it was just happening inside one person could explain how it wasn't seen for so long.
